Here's the real deal. I've been thinking about writing this article for a while now but I don't know if I can come up with enough examples to make it a regular series. So I'm going to get things started and see if RefinedHype Nation can pick it up from there. Got it?
So what's a "Rap Line That Needs to Die"? It has two primary characteristics. One, some version of the line has to have been used over and over again. Two, each rapper who uses it acts like they made it up/they're clever for using it. Nothing helps like examples....
"I've Smoked a Lot of Marijuana Which Has Made My Eyes Stereotypically Resemble an Asian Person."
(:54 "I like to smoke till my eyes look Chinese")
This is my number one offender. I can't pinpoint the first time it was used, but I feel like I've been hearing some version of "so high I look Chinese" for at least a decade. It wasn't even that funny the first time, but from Ludacris to whoever the fuck that guy above is has used some version of it. And the worst is when they laugh a little bit after they say it, like they just came up with the funniest line of all-time.
Please stop rapper, please. There's got be a thousand other ways to describe how someone looks when they're really high, pick another one.
"[Insert Demographic Group Here] Follow Me Like Twitter"
("Groupies follow me like Twitter.")
Obviously a far more recent example, but I've been hearing it for at least a year or so now. Yeah, we get it. You follow people on Twitter, people follow you in real life. Check. But what really drove the final nail into the "follow me" coffin was Kreyashawn's "Gucci Gucci". Remember when your mom said "bling" and you knew the word was officially dead? When Kreyshawn's using a line it's time to move on people.
There, hopefully that's enough to spark some more examples. I'm obviously only in the beginning stages of "Rap Lines That Need to Die", but just like "Rap Lines That Make No Fucking Sense" I'm betting that once you start looking for examples you'll spot 'em everywhere.
Well, what you guys got?
