The legendary
Roots crew is rolling heavy with
John Legend these days. Just a few days after they dropped the Legend-assited "
Doin' It Again", they're back at it again with the release of "
The Fire". Sonically speaking, ironically "The Fire" is actually pretty cool and minimalistic by roots standards, consisting primarily of ?uestlove laying down a simply drum backbone, a few piano keys and a looping bass. Of course Blackthought rocks a mic as well as ever, though I have to admit this isn't one of his best performances. And somewhat surprisingly they run Legend's vocals through the production cycle a few times until it sounds more like a sample than live vocals. I don't know, I'm gonna have to marinate on this one for a minute.
Maybe it's just because I was hoping they're release at least one uptempo jam (damn I miss me some "
Break You Off"), but I haven't been blown away by anything off "How I Got Over" so far. Hopefully I'll find at least a couple crowd movers on the album when it drops on June 22.
