Tech N9ne is the Best Rapper Alive

Posted by E. Jaffe on 10/21/10 | Filed under Features, Tech N9ne

Tech N9ne
On August 3, self-proclaimed “Best Rapper Alive” Lil’ Wayne called into Funkmaster Flex’s radio show from Rikers prison. The two spoke about Wayne’s experience behind bars and the enormous amount of support he has received from fans. About half-way through the interview, Wayne stated the following: “I've been saying to myself that I really want to do a song with either Andre 3000 or my man...Tech N9ne”. I know a lot of you are thinking “Who?” and that, my friends, is a tragedy.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Tech’s music, allow me to do the introductions. Tech N9ne is the most successful independent rapper in the country. He hails from Kansas City and, in my not-so-humble opinion, he’s the best rapper alive. Allow me to explain.

When one judges a rapper, there is a set list of qualities that must be taken into account when making an assessment. Those qualities are as followed: lyrical ability, entertainment value, flow, and marketability. At this point in my life, there is only one rapper that I have ever come across that has the lyrical prowess of Nas and Ludacris’ flow - that rapper is Tech N9ne.

Lyrical Ability

Did I really just say that Tech N9ne has the lyrical ability of Nas? I did. I realize that it’s a cardinal sin to mention an underground artist in the same breath as God’s Son but it’s true – Tech is equally talented. Just take a minute to listen to the song "One Good Time" – a track off 2008’s “Killer” in which Tech expresses an inability to cry despite his best efforts. The emotion in his voice on the song’s chorus, mixed with heartfelt verses, and incredible production make the track an instant classic. In a genre that’s often criticized for meaningless lyrics (congratulations to Waka Flocka’s “No Hands” for breaking the Top 40, by the way), Tech N9ne proves that, despite the impression that the radio may give, emotion still has a place in rap music. But don’t label him an “emo rapper”. The man throws one hell of a party.

Entertainment Value

Lets be honest, no one wants to hear Talib Tweli in the club and Flo Rida will never be mentioned in the same breath as Jay-Z. Rappers very much live inside of their comfort zones and there’s a good reason why; very few rappers are versatile enough to construct clubs hits while staying true to their lyrical roots (see Common’s “Universal Mind Control”). Off the top of my head, the only rappers I can think of that have this ability are Ludacris, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, T.I., Eminem, and Fabolous (all of which have had years of success thanks to their versatility). What separates Tech from other lyricists is his ability to put together a tear-jerking ode to his children on the same album as an absolute banger.

“So if Tech makes bangers, why haven’t I heard him on the radio?” you may ask. I’ll let Tech answer that one for you. (Yes. Tech raps faster in Pig Latin than your favorite rapper could in English) The fact of the matter is, Tech is a complete MC. That’s actually what the 9 stands for – the number of completion. A woman is pregnant for 9 months and a circle has 360 degrees (3+6+0=9). Don’t worry - my mind was blown too.

Flow

If you’ve been listening to the links that I have posted, there’s no reason why I should have to reiterate but, if you want to hear what the best flow in the business sounds like, look no further than "Too Much". Fast-forward to the forty-three second mark and listen to Tech make the beat his bitch. There’s no denying it; Tech is a beast.

Marketability

-He has sold over a million albums without breaking the Billboard Hot 100.
-He has been on tracks with the likes of Eminem, Three 6 Mafia, Ice Cube, Twista, Krayzie Bone, Crooked I, and Chino XL.
-His “Sickology 101” album remains one of the highest user-rated albums in DJBooth history and the album's lead single was widely acclaimed.

If you don’t believe this man knows how to market himself, you’re sadly mistaken.

Ten Essential Listens

"The Rain"
"Caribou Lou"
"Industry is Punks"
"The Beast"
"The Anthem" (w/Eminem, RZA, Xzibit, KRS-One, Chino XL...)
"Demons" (w/Three 6 Mafia)
"Blackboy" (w/Ice Cube, Krizz Kaliko)
"Problems" (w/Twista)
"Midwest Choppers II" (w/Krayzie Bone & K-Dean)
"Sickology 101" (w/Crooked I & Chino XL)

Conclusion
Wayne is going to be eaten alive.

Bets anyone?

I really love the way he uses his voice. His flow is incredible. Sometimes you think his voice is instrumental. But.....his lyrics do not entertain me much. Im not saying this as an argument to why he is not the best alive, just why I cant listen to his music for too long. He might as well be the best alive.

I could spend all day talking about how good Tech N9ne is. I have been listening to him now for nearly 6 years. He is just a beast and is so under the radar that no one knows of him unless you have heard about him from a friend.

Great article and the other thing that Tech has is his music can be hard one second and then he can drop a goofy ass track the next. People think that what Em brings is controversial, they should hear what he says, but thats what being underground allows you to do. I actually have heard his songs dropped in a club though. Over spring break "Bout to Bubble" must have played 10 times during the week. Only me and my friends knew who it was but everyone loved it.

Favorite tracks (that were not mentioned):
Earthquake
Bout to Bubble
Jellysickle
Be Warned
In the Trunk
Einstein
Imma Playa Remix
Imma Tell
Leave Me Alone (one of the most mainstream songs he has ever done)
OG
In the Trunk
Pu Wah Wah

The list just goes on, he just covers all areas (street, club, etc) and does it so well. I hope he does go on a song with Wayne, maybe it'll give him some due credit.

I was wondering if I was the only one who considered Tech N9ne as great!

I got to know him at Djbooth only when he dropped Sickology 101, after reading so many of my fellow members say he's amazing. And they were absolutely right. Since then, I listened to Killer, and I couldn't be more impressed.

His lyrics on Sickology (and flow) explain pretty much how talented and above competition he is.

@FredRico - You're definitely not alone. Tech has one of the largest and most dedicated fan-bases that I have ever come across. He sells out every show. I highly recommend you look into getting tickets to see him live. He's one of the best performers out there.

@1stround-ko - Care to elaborate?

I don't think any ONE rapper can be the single best rapper of all time. (Or best alive)

Eminem doesnt get as much respect as he deserves, same with some other rappers. Jay-Z is probably #1 or #2, listen to the lyrics of his deeper songs and you can understand why. He got into rap to make money, but theres no doubt hes top 5 of all time.
Tech, idk havent gave enough time, but I cant see how he can fit into #1 or #2. Its definitely Em/Jay-Z for 1 and 2. Nas #3. after that it gets harder to pick.
Yall might hate me but Lil Wayne is probably 4 or 5. Kanye West the other 4 or 5.

listen
1. Man (or superhuman) who posses the most skill in rhyme, flow, delivery, lyricism (Rap), on the planet.
2.tech n9ne- technique combines with 9, the number of completion, to create the complete teqnique. music is for everyone, not trying to impress only black people by talkin about the hood, so his fan base is split.
2. Only rapper being defined by the term "hippie".
2. most CONSISTENT; his verse will always outshine the verse of anyone on the track with him, and he will do this everytime.
IT AINT ONLY ABOUT SPEED
3. the only rapper not involved in the music industy, THE REASON WHY IGNORANT PEOPLE DONT SHOW RESPect. However, he is as successful and wealthy as every hot rapper in the game right now, except like hov and 50 and shit but they be doin other thing n shit. and he aint talkin only about the success like everyone on the radio whos mainstream,
1. has amazing production on some albums, such as everready and kod, that creates a sound that no rapper will ever create. mixture of the beat with the crazy ass hooks with tech and kaliko. one of a kind. cassidy like styles, jada like big, big like fab, fab like wayne, waynes like jay z and eminem, but NO ONE IS LIKE TECH N9NE. not just different flows and creative wordplays and voices and effects and melodic parts and shit, different MUSIC than any other rap artists music.
67. A GENRE OF MUSIC of its one featuring the best rapper alive
