A couple weeks ago I first heard DMV-representer Phil Ade (pronounced "Ah-Day") drop more punchlines per verse than Fabolous on his new track "Hollywood" and instantly vowed to follow all the man's new material. Well I'm following through with that vow today with the video for "Hollywood", a sneaker-filled, Fresh Prince-watchin, Tabi Bonney directed look at a day in the (somewhat imaginary) life of Phil Ade.
The Refined Take:
1) Hmmmm...eating cereal and watching the Fresh Prince in front of a giant collection of fresh kicks you say? Remind me to spend some more time hanging out with Phil Ade. Also, if that sneaker collection is any indication, he's not kidding when he says "I'm poor off of Karmaloop."
2) As I said in the intro, this man does punchlines and he does them damn well. My favorite? "Something gotta give in but it ain't gonna be me though, they say I'm crazy cause of me they Cee-Lo." Damn, now that's some good ish.
3) For the record, I live in the L.A., and far from the glamorous city the world seems to think it is, Hollywood is mostly a trashy place filled with homeless dudes who dress up like Spiderman and throw cups of cold coffee at you if you don't pay to have their picture taken with them. Seriously.
4) The video was directed by Tabi Bonney, who's a quality rapper in his own right. By the way, great call by Bonney to include the chicks wearing door knocker earrings. I'm loving that old school style.
5) That's one of the least realistic basketball scenes since a 5 foot 8 Edward Norton threw down a reverse dunk in "American History X".
6) If you're digging Phil Ade be sure to download his new mixtape "Starting for the JV" here. And if you've got any questions about his freestyle abilities, check this out.
