Very few modern artists can truly pay proper homage to classic soul and r&b, but the eclectically talented Mayer Hawthorne is definitely one of them. Last week Hawthorne's unique brand of retro-soul was on full display at New York's Webster Hall Mayer as he crooned to a spellbound audience just like a classic Motown artist would have back in the day.
Mayer started off the evening with a wonderful cover of "Star Time" by James Brown, followed closely by a slew of songs from his critically acclaimed album "A Strange Arrangement", including hits like "Make Her Mine", "Green Eyed Love" & "Easy Lovin". Of course, the track that really got the evening moving was his supremely smooth "Maybe So, Maybe No".
But Hawthorne wasn't content to simply concentrate on his material. During the course of his performance he would intermittently sprinkle in covers ranging from The Marvelettes to N E R D, and even managed to squeeze in a cover of Biz Markie's super classic "Just a Friend", expertly blending it into his instantly classic single "Just Ain't Working Out". All in all I would highly recommend seeing Mayer live if you're fortunate enough to have him come to your city on his "A Strange Arrangement Tour".
