Mariah Carey, Drake and Other Onstage Wipeouts

Posted by Nathan S. on 11/03/09 | Filed under Features

Last night on the "Jay Leno Show" Mariah Carey almost ate it while making her entrance, thanks in no small part to some five inch heels. Although Mariah miraculously managed to save herself from total embarrassment, other artists weren't quite so lucky. Here's five great examples of onstage chicanery these artist would rather pretend never happened. Unfortunately for them, the video doesn't lie.

Mariah Carey Slips on Jay Leno

The video that inspired this tangent, Mariah Carey nearly takes a tumble on last night's "Jay Leno Show". Luckily she manages to catch her balance and not fall (who knew Mariah had some ninja skills?), but what's truly remarkable is that she managed to undergo such turbulence without one or both of her enormous breasts popping out of her dress, an incident that would certainly come to be known as "the only goddamn way I would ever watch the "Jay Leno Show".

Rick Ross Goes Down Hard

Perhaps the father of all onstage wipeouts, I could watch Rick Ross do down all day. In his defense the stage was very poorly lit, but that doesn't make it any less funny. Once he falls he's like a turtle on his back, he just can't get turned around so he can get back up. His skinny boys onstage gamely try to help him up, but it's pretty much a lost cause at that point. For a complete, second-by-second breakdown of Ricky's fall, click here.

Drake Blows Out His ACL Onstage

A generation of young girls watched this video in horror like my parents watched the JFK assassination. Teen heartthrob-turned-legit-rapper Drake had reportedly already hurt his knee in a game of pick-up basketball, so when he landed on it the wrong way during a performance he went down like he got hit with a sniper bullet. Take it from someone who's also f**ked up their knee - it's not the force of the impact, it's the angle, and the angle he lands at just completely blows out his ACL. In fact, the man needed surgery. Props to Drake for continuing to trying to play through the pain though.

Rich Boy Throws Some Ds on the Floor

The youngsters may not believe me, but once upon a time (2007) there was a rapper named Rich Boy and he had the biggest single in the country. In fact he was so popular that every promoter wanted him to play at their shows, even the ones with shaky onstage equipment. I have to hand it to Rich Boy though, this is probably the coolest anyone managed to be after falling. He even attempts the old "I fell off the stage because I'm working so hard" move, which is about the best you can do under the circumstances. My favorite part is actually his hype boys and DJ, who have no idea what to do after he falls and just keep playing. Nice work guys, nice work.

Some Random British Dude Eats It During a Battle

Ok, ok, I know this one isn't as high profile as the rest, but I laughed so hard when I saw it I had to share. During a battle Professor Green, that's the white dude with the hilarious accent, falls down for no apparent reason. Tripped by a ghost. My favorite part is when he tries to incorporate it into the freestyle by rhyming "I fell offstage, but it's cool." Um, actually no, it's not cool. It's the exact opposite of cool actually. Although, if he had managed to flip the situation into a dope freestyle, that might have to go down as the greatest comeback in battle rap history.
