Erykah Badu Assasinated in “Window Seat” Video

Posted by Nathan S. on 03/29/10 | Filed under Videos, Erykah Badu

This shouldn't surprise anyone who's followed the woman's music closely, but the video for Erykah Badu's new single "Window Seat" is just, well, crazy. In a good way, I think, but crazy, cause, well....you know what? You're just going to have to watch it. And I know it starts out a little slow, but keep watching until the end. We'll resume discussion after the video.

The Refined Take:

1) Ok, so obviously a lot to talk about here, but the only thing I can think about is; do all those people know this is a video shoot, or are they completely random bystanders? If so, that's a pretty relaxed reaction to a woman stripping of her clothes, pretending to be shot and than laying down on the sidewalk. Then again, maybe they're all thinking, "Ok...don't know what's going on, but I do know I don't want to get involved in it."

2) For the record, Badu is walking the same route through Dallas' Dealey Plaza that J.F.K. rode before he was assassinated, and then she's shot at (almost) the same spot as J.F.K.; that's the so called "grassy knoll" behind her. I'd like to thank the Discovery Channel's spellbinding two-hour documentary about the assassination for keeping me so sharp on my Dealey Plaza game.

3) Sometimes I'm almost embarrassed by how basic my man brain can be, but even in the midst of such a dopely artistic video, one of the prevailing thoughts running through my head is, "wow, Erykah's got a booty on here." Don't lie ladies, you know you were thinking the same thing.

4) Does anyone know what gets spelled out by the blue blood after she gets shot? (The fact that I wrote that sentence is crazy). I can't make it out. Is it "GAPX"? Some symbology? Random scribbling? Anyone?

5) I think we can all expect to hear more fearlessly creative music when Erykah’s new album "New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)" drops in stores tomorrow, March 30.

Bonus RefinedTake) I did some research, and the "Inspired by Matt an Kim" in the beginning of the video is a reference to this flick from some indie rock-ish group called Matt and Kim. Ok then.

I was there!!

They filmed this on Elm Street in Dealey Plaza and no those are NOT extras. Some dudes were yellin out shit and whistling and shit but mostly everybody was just standing around like WTF?? is this really happening? I guess most ppl didnt recognize her, but it was hard to miss the camera and crew following her. And I wasn't right up next to her, but from what I could see she was really completely naked. There's GOT to be photos of this somewhere cuz I saw plenty of dudes snappin pics and taking videos... uhh... for ...you perverts of course. not me. lol

Also...
Pause it at 5:12.. it spells out Group Think

@Almost Forgotten Word? That's crazy. Glad we could get a first hand account. I guess it just goes to show - when a woman takes off her clothes in public, people mostly just stand there and watch. I'll keep that in mind smile

Matt and Kim rock some mean music just about as much as Badu (ever heard Hoodinternet's mashup of them and Beastie Boys' "Rumpshaker"? Blew my mind). However, Badu wins the award for more..well..original vid.
