Well I'll be damned. Hip-hop moves at an insanely fast pace, and if you step off the grind for even a minute, you'll get left behind with almost no chance of catching back up. So the chances that Ahmad - a.k.a. that 17-year-old guy kid who dropped the classic "Back in the Day" and then essentially disappeared for 15 years - would return from his extended hiatus with legitimately dope music were frankly slim. Well the man's defying the odds, because his new single "Get Some Money & Go 2 Jail" can been stuck in my head ever since the video dropped a couple weeks ago and now that the track's out, I'll be bumping it all day.
That sparse, big band jazz influenced beat's hypnotic, Crooked I absolutely murders his guest verse, and Ahmad's developed this raspy, quasi-melodic style that's pretty damn good in its own right. As far as hip-hop was concerned I had given the man up for dead, but he's definitely alive and kicking. Speaking of which, his "don't call it a comeback" album "The Death of Me" is set to drop on August 10.
