The Definitive Collection of Rap Voicemail SkitsPosted by Nathan S. on 01/25/12 | Filed under Top Stories, Features |

I was listening to Mary J. Blige’s classic “My Life” album last night - I’m man enough to admit I fuck with old school R&B, what? - and although I’ve heard “Intro” 100 times, I heard it in a new way. Wait, is that the first example of a voicemail skit/interlude on an album? And of course that set me off…
And so now I turn to you RefinedHype Nation. I collected the first examples that came to mind - hit me up with more examples in the comments below (just like the Drunk Driving collection). Some quick notes before we get started:
* There are some great phone call skits (Outkast’s “Kim & Cookie” is a personal favorite), but I’m solely looking for voicemail here.
* For most of hip-hop history “voicemail” meant “answering machine”. Just for those who want to get super technical on me.
* I’ve realized 90% of voicemails fall into one of the four following categories: One, angry ex-girlfriend. Two, angry/shady record label exec. Three, montage of calls from friends checking in. Four, yo, get down to the studio now!
Each week we will send you a recap of our top stories, downloads, and videos.
