We spend a lot of time around these parts examining the financial workings of hip-hop. However, there's one revenue stream I hadn't considered until yesterday - taking money from brutal dictators. That's right, over the past two years Mariah Carey, Usher and Beyonce have all taken millions from Libyan dictator Muammar Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi. God I'm so angry about this f**kery.
If "8701" was Usher's last 'teen' album, "Confessions" was his graduation into adulthood. Usher sang on his previous album with a boyish breeziness that few could match, but on "Confessions" it's clear the boy is now a man. Usher recorded over forty tracks for "Confessions", which was released in March 2004 to great reception from critics and fans alike. See more...
At first I wasn't so sure about Usher's new cut "Get Into My Car", featuring an increasingly popular Bun B, so I stuck it into yesterday's "Daily Re-Up". But then I woke up this morning with that banging, horn heavy, impossibly catchy Polow da Don beat in my head and I knew it was worth its own post. Listen and download...
in the modern era, any popular album like "Raymond vs. Raymond" gets put out again as a "re-release" a few months later, and the only way to justify a "re-release" is, of course, with a handful of new track. Hence today we're presented with "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love", a David Guetta produced cut that should appropriately be huge in the club. Listen and download...
The last few weeks were looking great for urban music. Eminem was flying up the charts, B.o.B. was holding the crown at number one, Usher was staying strong, but this week? This week Usher's the only urban artist even within striking distance of having a top ten album. See more...
For one shining moment urban music was back on top - Ludacris and then Usher both hit number one within a few weeks of each other - but it looks like those glory days are now gone. While Usher's "Raymond vs. Raymond" continues to sell reasonably well, slipping down to the number five slot this week, overall this week's charts are dominated by, well, white people, and one young white boy in particular. This week Justin Bieber let Usher really know what's up. See more...
A week after Usher's "Raymond V. Raymond" debuted at #1 with 329k copies sold, the face of LaFace Records is back at it again. In his second week on the charts the "OMG" singer moved another 92k units to bring his two week grand total (for all you non-math majors out there) to roughly 423k. Read More...
I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong, and so far I'm completely and totally wrong about Usher's new album "Raymond v. Raymond". Despite my predictions that it wouldn't sell strong (due to leaks and a lack of a real hit), Ursher baby's latest opus came in at the number one slot in the country, moving 329,107 units in its first week. People went walnuts when I dropped Usher and Nicki Minaj's porn-esque, lesbian oriented, not even remotely safe for work track "Little Freak", so I can only imagine what the reaction's going to be like now that we have some accompanying visuals that are more than worthy of the song's title. So grab some popcorn, call the kids, and get to watching. Come on, I know you want to. See more...
Another day, another "Raymond vs. Raymond" leak (more on that later), and in honor of the guest artist on today's leak I'll be calling its headliner Ursher for the remainder of this article. That's right, Ludacris has reunited with the former Mr. Tameka Foster for the high energy "She Don't Know", a brightly bouncing track about a chick in Ursher's life playing hard to get (unlikely). After a series of disapoitnment, this may just be one of the best tracks I've heard so far off the album. Listen and download...
