Welcome to the most anti-climactic article of all-time. Right about now, with the news that Drake's "Take Care" debuted at number one and moved an impressive-no-matter-how-you-look-at-it 700,000 copies, I know Drizzy lovers are throwing up a middle finger to the haters, and the haters are bemoaning the softening of hip-hop. It's official, J. Cole's major label debut, "Cole World", is the number one album in the country, moving a very impressive 218K units in the first week. I won't front, I'm surprised. I thought the best case scenario for Cole was something like 150K, so the man shattered my expectations. Congrats to Cole, hip-hop's better for having him on top. So what lessons can we draw from the success of "Cole World"? See more...
This week I'll be devoting the entire sales column to one topic and one topic only: Lil Wayne's (almost) one million in first week sales of "Carter IV", an album that, I think we can all agree, sucked like than a drunk college girl on spring break. So how do we explain 964,000 in sales? See more...
If I had known that Game's "R.E.D. Album" would debut at #1 when I was writing the article I would have made it the centerpiece of my debate with Andreas, but instead I'll have to settle for a belated "told you so!" Yep, that's #1, meaning he knocked out The Throne from the top spot. See more...
The chart battle between Beyonce and Kelly Rowland's new albums actually serves as a great lesson about durability. Almost every week we see an album that debuted highly plummet down the charts, which means that while they may be "hot" at the moment, they just don't have the foundation to spur lasting sales. All of their fans rush out to buy the album the first week and after that, there's no one left.
As I wrote in my review over at the mothership, I think we can officially say that Kelly Rowland has official stepped out of Beyonce's shadow. She'll never be as big as her former Destiny's Child compatriot, but she's done enough - including having her new album "Here I Am" debut as the number three album in the country - to be considered her own woman, and artist. For all those waiting to see if the numbers would confirm that Big Sean is indeed the next big thing, the answer is a resounding yes. His "Finally Famous" album debuted at the number three position, moving 87,000 copies in its first week. Not to shabby, especially considering the two artists who beat him out were Beyonce and Adele; pretty good company to be in. See more...
If you're looking for a reason to be optimistic about the future of the music industry, this week is reason. I can't remember the last time I looked at the top ten albums and saw this much good music (not GOOD Music). Jill Scott, who by the way is the shit, has the number one album in the country, followed by Kanye's favorite indie rocker Bon Iver, Adele and Bad Meets Evil. See more...
Instead of the usual Wendesday sales column, I was inspired by an email I received today to take a slightly different tact. Since this email was sent by someone who works for a major label, and they're essentially ranting, I need to protect my sources, but here's a rough transcription of what they said: "If you still think physical sales of CDs matter you're in idiot.
Each week we will send you a recap of our top stories, downloads, and videos.
