Production Breakdown: Marion Write’s “Field of the Dollar”
I've never been to Las Vegas and, until now, I've never felt the urge to visit. A dope record, however, is a powerful thing – and “Field of the Dollar,” the latest mixtape leak from up-and-comer Marion Write, is about as intriguing an introduction to Sin City's mystique as a hip-hop connoisseur could ask for. Production Breakdown: The Convoluted Sampling History of “Bumpy’s Lament”
When I did a little research on the instantly-recognizable sample that formed the backbone of Freddie Gibbs' latest offering, “Something New"” I quickly realized that I'd struck Production Breakdown gold – I knew those couple bars had appeared in numerous tracks, but I didn't guess just how ubiquitous it was... Production Breakdown: Soul Khan’s “Thunder in Paradise”
As excited as I am by the mounting tide of crazily creative urban pop we've been hearing in the Booth, there's still nothing like a deftly-flipped vintage-soul sample to brighten up my day – especially when said sample is borrowed from a classic joint I haven't heard before. The latest joint to earn a place in my headphones, along with its source material was “Thunder in Paradise,” the DJBooth debut and latest solo single from Brown Bag All-Stars member and renowned battle rapper Soul Khan. Production Breakdown: Moxie Black’s “So Much Better”
This week, yet another dope vocalist/producer duo landed on the Booth's radar. Illaj and Dekk, together known as Moxie Black introduced themselves to the Booth with “So Much Better,” a leak off their forthcoming "How Did This Happen?" mixtape. While I quickly decided I liked what I was hearing, I was anxious to see just how readers would respond. Read more and watch video...

Production Breakdown: Genres - Who Needs ‘Em?
Can you believe that, not long ago, there was a sizable contingent of heads who really and truly thought that hip-hop was either dead, or on its last legs? I'm sure there are still those who'd agree with that sentiment, but it's been quite a while since I've heard anyone seriously espouse it – and anyone who would, well, they're probably not paying a whole lot of attention. Production Breakdown: Hip Hop & Video Game Beats - A Match Made in Heaven?

Production Breakdown: Hip Hop & Video Game Beats - A Match Made in Heaven?
While I'm fairly sure that making the high-score list in Pac-Man is no more likely to get you laid than it ever was (although I'm terrible at that game, so who knows), the bleeps and bloops emblematic of retro gaming have most definitely made their mark on the hip-hop scene. Too many artists to count have made old-school gaming samples part of their music, but here are just a few of my favorites. Read More/Watch Video...

Production Breakdown - Gilbere Forte’s “Take One x Dawn”

Production Breakdown - Gilbere Forte’s “Take One x Dawn”
Amidst all the freshness to hit the Booth this week, there was just one feature that elicited not one but two consecutive reader reviews consisting entirely of the word ”Damn!” I speak, of course, of “Take One x Dawn,” the latest leak off recent reader fave Gilbere Forte's forthcoming, DJBooth-sponsored “87 Dreams” street album As the dual title indicates, the track found the restlessly-creative Philly up-and-comer flowing over two separate beats – two beats which, at first listen, could hardly have less in common with each other. Production Breakdown: Von Pea’s “Something to Do”

Production Breakdown: Von Pea’s “Something to Do”
When a rapper cuts an incredibly dope record centered around a sample from my favorite track off one of the most underappreciated albums on my hard drive, causing me to spit coffee all over my monitor, how can I, in good conscience, allow that sh*t to be slept on? Which track am I referring to, you ask? "Something to Do," the latest mixtape leak from Tanya Morgan member Von Pea. Read More/Watch Video...

Production Breakdown: Killah Priest’s “B.I.B.L.E” (Video)

Production Breakdown: Killah Priest’s “B.I.B.L.E” (Video)
One of my favorite tracks to vibe out to when skies are gray, “B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth)” should be familiar to anyone who's listened to Wu-Tang member GZA's acclaimed solo debut, "Liquid Swords." Tacked onto the LP's back end, it presents a drastic shift in tone from the rest of the tracklist, and acts as a powerful climax to the set – or it would, if it were part of the album. In reality, it isn't by GZA and, unlike the rest of the LP, isn't even produced by RZA. The record is by the the lesser-known Killah Priest, and was included presumably to create buzz for the up-and-coming Wu-Tang affiliate. Read More/Watch Video...

Production Breakdown: Doesn’t Anyone Make New Music Anymore?

Production Breakdown: Doesn’t Anyone Make New Music Anymore?
“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.“ To my mind, that statement is both crucial to understanding today's pop music landscape, and totally, dangerously misleading. See more...
