While it may be a premature eulogy, I couldn't help but already look back on a group that laid down the blueprint for hardcore NYC rap. After huddling up with @DJBoothCEO, one of the most serious Mobb Deep fans I know, we assembled a quick strike list of Mobb's most essential tracks.
On the real, I feel like Prodigy's look straight at me on that cover, and he's saying "Yo dun, I thought this was a hip-hop site. And you're posting about Rihanna and Chris Brown and B.o.B. and shit? Give me one good reason why I shouldn't smack the bi**h out of your right now."
"Waterboarding" isn't what I expected at all from an Alchemist-produced Mobb Deep song. The beat sounds like something that would fit perfectly on a MF Doom album. Regardless the song is still pretty dope and it's nice hearing Mobb Deep rap over a beat that's a little out of the norm for them. Listen and download...
From old school ODB to new school Freddie Gibbs, hip-hop's been filled with rappers who simply don't give a fuck and do whatever they want - but few have given less of a fuck than Mobb Deep's Prodigy. And now that's he's sober and out of prison, we get to listen to him reflect on his wild past. Listen and download...
It's moments like this that make me believe in God. Just moments after I was desperately trying to wipe the horrible taste of that Lil Wayne verse from my ears, the good lord Allmighty took pity on my rap soul and delivered some salvation in the form of Mobb Deep and Nas' new joint, "Get It Forever". If I didn't know any better I honestly would have thought that yesterday was National Jay Electronica Day. The rapper seemed to all of a sudden start Tweeting again, he made several public appearances throughout the day, and to top it all off he finally released some new music. Listen and download...
In a lot of ways, Mobb Deep is the archetypal east coast street rap crew. Capable of absolute classics, they were also incredibly inconsistent, due no doubt in part to the fact that Havoc and/or Prodigy were constantly in and out of jail. Hopefully now that Prodigy's no longer behind bars they'll have the stability to starting making uncut, raw hip-hop again like new single "Dog Sh*t" featuring Nas. Listen and download....
