I've never been to Las Vegas and, until now, I've never felt the urge to visit. A dope record, however, is a powerful thing – and “Field of the Dollar,” the latest mixtape leak from up-and-comer Marion Write, is about as intriguing an introduction to Sin City's mystique as a hip-hop connoisseur could ask for. I won't front. I knew Las Vegas representer Marion Write (a.k.a. the rhyme-half of The Perfect Formula) had some serious skill, but I didn't know he could do it like this. When I first heard his new cut "Field of the Dollar" is was impressed by its heavily jazz-influenced sound (so I threw it into the Daily Re-Up), but then I found myself listening to it again the next day, and again the next, and now "Dollar" has joined my regular rotation. Almost unbelievably it's been over six months since Marion Write first appeared on our pages with his dope "May December Freestyle", but in that relatively short time the Sin City emcee has quickly become a RefinedHype favorite known for his deceptively complex yet always accessible rhyme scheme and double entree laden rhymes. So I'm sure it will come as no surprise to RefinedHype nation that we've given a listen to Marion's latest opus, the "Write History" mixtape, and judged it more than gracing our not-so-humble pages. It's been a minute since we've heard from Las Vegas based up-and-comer Marion Write (see November's "Much Appreciated") but he's obviously been using all that time wisely, as his new track "Dreams" shows. Featuring appropriately ethereal, piano based production from SB, gripping vocals from Eden Alexis and a guest verse from HerStory creator Dominique Larue, "Dreams" is first and foremost Write's show as he gets on his storytelling tip and breaks down the lives of ordinary people whose dreams are cut short by tragedy. After dominating the 90s and then almost disappearing for the first part of the 2000s, the west coast is back on the come up, and this time it's covering a lot more ground than just L.A. Personified by Flo Deep Music Group, the new west coast covers everything from L.A. to Las Vegas, and to demonstrate the depth of left coast talent they've assembled "Lyrical Content Vol. 1", a mixtape featuring some of the best and brightest emcees from the sunnier states. You know what I appreciate? People who hand out Reese Cups at Halloween, Salma Hayek's bedroom scene in "Desperado" and emcees with original flows. That's why I appreciate Marion Write, and the Las Vegas rapper wants to return the love on his new track "Much Appreciated", a typically witty lyrical jaunt set over a carnival-esque beat. Las Vegas has been largely overlooked as a hip-hop city (largely thanks to gambling and strippers), but Marion Write is slowly but surely letting the world know that some serious lyricists reside in the desert paradise. Case in point: Write's latest release, "May December Cipher", nearly four minutes of hookless, straight rhymes over a now old-school beat from 88 Keys and Mos Def that prove that Write is an emcee to be taken seriously.
