Although Freeway's latest release makes the rapper sound like he's the master of the church choir (blame it on the organs) rather than the "Master Of Ceremony" it's still quite the enjoyable tune. While it might sound like Freeway's rapping in front of the congregation on "Master Of Ceremony" the only thing he's praising is the streets, tearing stages down, and other rap related pleasantries. Take a supremely mellowed out beat by Royal Flush & Marc Real, add in vocals from the fast rising Young Scolla, the always fresh Rapper Big Pooh and the increasingly lyrical Freeway and you've got some good music. No flash, no gimmicks, just good music. And isn't that why we're here? (Ok, besides the booty, isn't that why we're here?)
There was a moment, let's call it 2002, when State Property was a legitimate force. With the Roc-A-Fella juggernaut backing them, Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Peedi Peedi and the Young Gunz (Young Chris and Neef Buck) were slated to move some serious weight. And then as the Roc fell apart, so did State Prop...until today!
Although producer/rapper groups were once common (word to Eric B. and Rakim) true turntable/microphone collaborations in the digital era have been rarer than Rick Ross on a treadmill. Leave it to Freeway, who's slowly but surely transitioning from Roc-A-Fella street rapper to hip-hop guardian, to bring shit back to its roots. Listen and download....
Now this might sound somewhat crazy, but I'm a little disappointed that Freeway's "Beard Motivation 101" isn't about his beard. I was really looking forward to the possibility of Freeway rapping about his beard maintenance routine and the struggles he faces as a bearded man in America, but no such luck. Maybe one day we'll truly get a Beard Anthem. Listen and download...
You can file this one under "random shit I'm obsessed about and since I get to write whatever I'm writing about". The other day the homey @eddieftw reminded me of Kanye's dope "Two Words" track, a song that's always held a special place in my heart - mostly because I love listening to the "Two Words" concept fall apart. Philadelphia rapper Freeway and producer Benja Styles recently teamed up to remix Estelle's "Break My Heart" and the end result is very 90's throwback. The remix of the song samples Black Moons "How Many MC's," but on top of that Freeway hops on the song with an edgy rawness that's reminiscent of a lot of 90's Hip-Hop tracks. Listen and download...
Let's just keep it simple, shall we? The good folks over at Puma got talking to the mothership and decided to put out a collaborative album. We hit up some of our favorite artists, compiled new exclusive material from them and boom, "Uncontested" was born. Is the project any good? Well, how do you feel about "Winner". Over the past year Freeway has been slowly but steadily moving towards the "underground" side of the map, revealing him to be a much deeper and doper emcee than many might have assumed from the "Flipside" days. As further proof the Philly Freezer offers up "Listen", a Jake One produced cut off his upcoming "Diamond in the Ruff" album. Listen....
I was a little skeptical of this song because the first 10 seconds almost lead you to believe that Freeway was on the verge of releasing his first ever techno track. But then a little bass kicked in and my Hip-Hop meets techno fears were overcome. Still the song isn't really something you'd expect from Freeway mostly because of the production.
