First and foremost, shout out to foxteck, who was the only one to figure out this week's Mystery Booty of the Week (MBOW) after some intrepid research. You were right, it was Selita Ebanks, the swimsuit model who's now most famous for dressing like a bird in Kanye's "Runaway" film. Congratulations, I'm sure your mom is proud. See more...
God it's been way too long since I've done a "Rap Lines That Make No F**king Sense" - lord know there's been no shortage of non-nonsensical lyrics, but Nicki Minaj's opening verse on this morning's "Blazing" inspired me to get back on my game. As always, to qualify a line can't merely be bad - it has to contain some fundamental error (ex. Jay-Z's "My .38 revolve like the sun around the Earth."). Let's down to business...
In honor of Jay-Z's “Decoded,” a new book that takes a look at the motivation behind some of Jay-Z’s most intriguing lyrics, we thought it would be interesting to come up with our own list of artists that need to be “Decoded.” And if “Decoded” is as successful as expected then give it a few months before one of the artists below has their own “Decoded” inspired book out.
A big problem with the digital age of music though, is that most artists aren’t using these resources properly. Time and time again I see artists wasting valuable funds and energy on promotional methods that are completely unnecessary. Just this morning I was sent a link to a music video from an artist I’ve never heard of before. Upon clicking the link, I again saw a shining example of a poorly timed promotional plan. See more...
Everyone's favorite, and I do mean favorite, RefinedHype series, "Mystery Booty of the Week (MBOW)" is back. Is the series a shameless and sexist way to keep your eyeballs glued to RefinedHype? You bet it is. Do I hear any complaints? Yeah, that's what I thought.
First and foremost, I want to make one thing clear, since I feel like a bit of a d-bag for posting this. There is absolutely no hate happening here. I'm posting this not to mock anyone or in any way discourage anyone from chasing their dream. Instead, I'm posting this in a sincere effort to: First, altruistically help some of the up-and-coming artists out there increase their chances of getting their music posted. Two, not so altruistically make my inbox look better. With that in mind....
It was fall yet again, winter was creeping up and by and large – Jay Electronica had captured hip-hop’s collective imagination. He did it some three years ago with Act I: Patents of Nobility. He definitively did it last year with the mind-blowing “Exhibit C”. Now Jay-Z gets wee bit narcissist and finds a way to sign hip-hop’s most nomadic rhymer to his Roc Nation label? See more...
Rappers may not be the best dressed artists around and that’s absolutely fine, but then there are a handful of rappers who take tacky to the next level. They stand out like a badly dressed sore thumb at red carpet events and look even worse when they’re in front of the general public. They are…
Richard's taking a well-deserved day off, which means you're stuck with me for this week's "Production Breakdown". (I know, I know. Even I don't think I'm as good as Richard when it comes to production. He's a genius, and I'm just, well, not a complete moron.) Anyway, while it's nowhere near his 14-part sample history behind Kanye's "The Joy", I did discover one tidbit of Yeezy-related sample goodness this week. See more...
In the latest of an ongoing series that will include the best...or worst...fails of the week from the world of hip-hop, sports, pop culture and beyond, I examine Kanye's fiasco of a "Today Show" appearance, 50's new, incredibly unlikely collabo, J. Cole's non-existent mixtape and more...
Each week we will send you a recap of our top stories, downloads, and videos.
