As I wrote on her "House Shoes" post, while the world freaks out about Nicki Minaj's takeover, there are still plenty of dope female emcees putting in work, from vets like Jean Grae to newcomers like, well, Nitty Scott. Scott is frankly one of the better young rhymers out there right now, and if you thinking I'm over hyping the Brooklyn emcee, check out her new project "The Cassette Chronicles". In a lot of ways, Mobb Deep is the archetypal east coast street rap crew. Capable of absolute classics, they were also incredibly inconsistent, due no doubt in part to the fact that Havoc and/or Prodigy were constantly in and out of jail. Hopefully now that Prodigy's no longer behind bars they'll have the stability to starting making uncut, raw hip-hop again like new single "Dog Sh*t" featuring Nas. Listen and download....
Whether he’s musing on the ups-and-downs of relationships and life or reveling in his ascension out of poverty, Singapore Kane's new mixtape "Wrath of Kane" is real hip-hop from one of Boston’s illest and most promising wordsmiths. Listen and download....
In all the debate surrounding whether or not Lupe "sold out" on "Lasers" let's not forget that there are no shortage of artists who have made their music, their way, for years, label politics be damned - artists like Pharoahe Monch. After the supremely dope "Clap", Pharoahe is back with his new single, "Black Hand Side". Listen...
Having worked on the outskirts of the mainstream for over 10 years, it is quite fitting that the first full length video off the upcoming Wrath of Kane mixtape, presented by yours truly, is“Outside The Margins”. Over a haunting vocal sample and an understated piano melody, Singapore describes the peaks and lulls in his journey to the top of the rap game. Listen, download and watch...
As a general rule anything coming from the Brown Bag All-Stars camp is going to be dope, and sure enough the new "Problems" record from El Gant, the four time MTV Direct Effect (DFX) battle champ, is exactly the kind of underground east coast hip-hop RefinedHype nation likes to bang heads too. I know I get accused of rampant homerism every time I post a track from a Boston artist, but this new REKS is so damn dope I don't care. Yeah, that's right, I give preferential treatment to rappers from the city of birth. So what? Go ahead and tell me this new "Why Cry" isn't dope. Go ahead, I'll wait. Listen and download...
Over the last couple weeks I've started thinking maybe, just maybe, if he gets back to the core of what made him so heavy in the first place, he could still regain his spot among rap's elite. First there was the beef heavy "Old 2002 Ferrari Freestyle", and now he's dropped a "When I Come Back" freestyle that's exactly the kind of gritty music his loyal fans have been missing. It's been approximately 75 years since Saigon first started working on his debut album "Greatest Story Never Told", but incredibly the project will finally drop tomorrow. (Or, it's "dropped" on my desktop right now.) Anyway, when people first got hyped about this album, they were hyped about tracks like "Bring Me Down Pt. 3". Listen and download....
