What’s more important, quality or quantity? That question has been debated over and over for many years within music circles and after all this time, one thing is certain: when it comes to Dr. Dre, quantity doesn’t mean a thing. Dre’s debut album, “The Chronic”, was released in 1992 is considered one of the best hip-hop albums of all time.
Well holy motherf**king s**t, what do we have here? (Hey, sometimes you just gotta swear). More than two months after Dr. Dre promised his new single “Under Pressure” would be dropping later that week, the good doctor’s single, the first solo single we’ve heard from him in over a decade, has, whether intentionally or not, found its way onto the interwebs. I know more than a couple people were angry about my Dr. Dre April Fool’s joke, but today I’m completely serious. Ok, not completely serious, but mostly serious. Before the Red Sox season opener last night, Dr. Dre and Interscope president Jimmy Iovine confirmed that he’s got a new single featuring Jay-Z called “Under Pressure” on the way. And that’s no joke. Looks like this is one bet I’m going to lose. Just a couple days after I declared there was no way that Dr. Dre’s epically delayed follow-up to his now decade old “Chronic 2001” album would ever be released, the good Dr. announced that his third studio album “Detox” would be released this summer, most likely in June. “I know my fans are waiting, and the world is waiting, and I’m about to give y’all what you’ve been waiting for,” said Dr. Dre. There are a lot of things that can be said about Dr. Dre’s album, “The Chronic”. That it’s an inventive, unique, fantastic piece of music and a memorable debut. Or that it embodies what it means to be ‘West Coast’ and live the ‘gangsta’ lifestyle. And although all of that is accurate, I think a quote from Kanye West describes “The Chronic” in perfect terms. In an interview West gave to Rolling Stone magazine, he said: “The Chronic is the hip-hop equivalent to Stevie Wonder’s ‘Songs in the Key of Life’. It’s the benchmark you measure your album against if you’re serious.” See more…
It’s hard to understate how revolutionary “Nothin but a G Thang” was when it dropped. Not only had America never heard rap like this before, but outside of L.A. no one had ever seen cars on three wheels or shots of the Compton streets. In retrospect, this was the video that truly put Snoop, Dre and the whole gangster rap movement on the radar of mainstream America. But enough talk, let’s get to the G-oscity. See more…
The crappy quality radio rip has been making the rounds, but RefinedHype’s finally got the real deal: Crooked I, Jay Rock, Marsha Ambrosius and Kida “Homage to Dr. Dre”. Frankly, it’s about time. Over a an appropriately Dre-inspired beat from TheRealFocus, Crooked and the rest of the crew take turns expounding on the truly legendary legacy that is Dr. Dre’s contribution to the hip-hop game. Sorry, let me simplify. Dr. Dre’s the shit, and you better recognize. See more to listen and download…
