Now I don't think he'll ever regain number one album status, in fact I'd be willing to lay money down on it, but after a solid performance at last night's BET Awards and a new track, 'It's Over the Dog is Back" that's perfectly solid, we might be talking about Earl Simmons as a force in the rap game once again before too long.
Disclaimer: If you think DMX's "Sucka 4 Love" is going to be anything like his highly successful, love-is-kinda-cool song "How's It Going Down" then my friend you're in for a world of disappointment. "Sucka 4 Love" is pretty awful especially when it comes to content. Here's a prime example of that, taken straight from the song. Listen and download...
When I first say that Swizz Beatz was going a remake of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" I was moderately terrified. Under no circumstances should the man who made "Gucci Rag" be allowed to touch one of the greatest soul songs ever. Thankfully, and surprisingly, the beat isn't half bad, and mercifully Swizzy doesn't say a word. DMX on the other hand...
In the mid-90s the hip-hop community was reeling. Everyone was still dealing with the tragic deaths of both 2Pac and the Notorious B.I.G. Hip-hop was waiting for something to happen, for someone to take the flag from those fallen stars and continue to bring hardcore rap into the new century. Whether it was out of anger, frustration or timing, DMX was that man. See more...
I had just finished writing a column titled "When Did Busta Rhymes Become Terrible" when Busta Bust decided to prove my point and drop the terrible "Stop the Party". You'll have to excuse me for not posting it...but with T.I., Cam'ron, Ghostface Killah and DMX joining in on the remix, the track's now interesting enough to discuss. Listen and download...
After watching that dope Behind the Music with DMX I'm not intensely interested in all things DMX again. So when his new track "Y'all Niggaz Bounce" found its way onto the interwebs, I actually paused before I pressed play and said a silent prayer. "Please sweet baby jesus," I whispered, "let this be a good track so I don't have to worry about X anymore." Listen and download...
If there was ever a rapper whose life was begging for a "Behind the Music" it's DMX, who went from one of the biggest rappers in the game to a crack-addicted, constantly jailed afterthought as quickly as he rose to fame. In all seriousness, it's one of hip-hop's most tragic stories. The same things that made Earl Simmons a star - his emotion, his pain, his realness - ultimately destroyed him. See more...
If you think about it the story of Earl Simmons (DMX) is tragic. The same anger that fueled his music also tore apart his personal life, effectively removing him from the rap game. So way back in May when a new DMX single leaked, then titled "The Way It's Gonna Be", and it sounded terrible, I hoped for the best. Maybe it was just a demo? Nope. Now renamed "Put Em Up" it's officially a single off his upcoming album, and it's so bad it kind of makes me sad. Listen and download...
