Unless you're walking around with a space heater in your pants - which, by the way, we do not recommend - you've noticed that the days have gotten much colder, darker and short. Not exactly the kind of thing that makes you want to hit the streets in search of the best the city has to offer.
That's why Hype NY will be taking a cue from mother nature and going into hibernation for the winter. So while you're warm inside your apartment watching the snow fall, we'll be locked in our offices, working to bring back Hype NY even bigger and stronger in the spring.
Thank you to everyone who helped make the our launch such an overwhelming success. Happy holidays, happy New Year and we'll see you soon.
We’ve each related entirely too well with R&B crooner Avant’s breakout breakup hit, “Separated” -- haven’t we? It’s one of those songs that makes you shake your head slowly in commiseration, much like the rest of the singer’s soulful sounds. He’s bringing his heart-rendingly vulnerable vocals to B.B. King’s on Friday night, fresh off this week’s release of his new album, The Letter. Want to get together to share his pain? Email me at evie@refinedhype.com with your favorite Avant song in the subject for your shot at one of five pairs of tickets!
The onslaught of New York holiday cheer is upon us -- soon, you won’t be able to turn a corner without happening upon a celebrity-soaked tree lighting/snowflake christening/gingerbread house ribbon-cutting in honor of the season. The first of many such events looks to be John Legend’s appearance on Thursday at the Bloomberg rotunda. Legend will be igniting the flames of festive shopping with performances from his recent release Wake Up! ahead of the unveiling of Bloomingdale’s holiday windows.
I remember the first time I ever heard Slick Rick’s classic track “Children’s Story,” and Rick has stood the test of time, paving the blinged-out way for other rappers after him -- who can forget Snoop’s take on "La Di Da Di?" -- and, over two decades after his debut album dropped, he’s still at it. This Friday, he’ll be performing The Great Adventures of Slick Rick in its entirety at B.B. Kings -- and I have three pairs of tickets up for grabs. Drop me an email at evie@refinedhype.com for a shot at holding audience to a true hip-hop pioneer. Enter and win!
The recent CMJ Music Fest was gleaming with musical gems waiting to be unearthed -- and I had the surprise of discovering Homeboy Sandman, who is definitely one to watch. If you’d like to catch your own glimpse of this MC on the rise, head due south for Southpaw in Brooklyn. Sandman will be on the mic -- and sharing the billing with the very of-the-moment group Das Racist. This show is sure to be a great moment in hip-hop on the verge of a feverish breakthrough, so make sure you don't miss it.
Canada has been staking its claim on the American music scene lately -- and you can add k-os to the growing list of names hailing from the Great White North. A veritable Renaissance man who counts musician, MC and producer among his titles, the Toronto talent has steadily been making heads nod on the alternative hip-hop scene. He’s bringing his upbeat blend of rap, reggae, funk and other dope sounds to the Highline Ballroom on Thursday night -- and I’ve got five pairs of tickets on-hand so you can catch him live. Hit me with an email at evie@refinedhype.com for a chance to win!
As part of this year's CMJ Music Marathon, DJBooth.net, Platform One and Vicarious Music have assembled a lineup of the game's hottest up-and-comers for Are You Listening?: An Ear to the Streets Showcase. Emilio Rojas the Rochester New York phenom (and freestyle series alum) who brought us The Natural headlines the event, which goes down October 21, at the Lower East Side's Sapphire Lounge.
Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of attending the invite only Hennessy Artistry Tour Finale, which took place at one of New York City’s esteemed Cipriani Restaurant and Ballroom locations on Wall Street. Thursday night was the last stop on their five-city tour featuring an eclectic mix of the music industry’s hottest stars as well as some old school legends. See more...
The song “Cherchez La Ghost” randomly loops through my head from time to time, reminding me that I need to get up on my Ghostface Killah. He’s one of the most prolific members of the Wu Tang Clan, and you can catch him this Friday at B.B. King’s. Want to be there to get some of his catchy tracks stuck in your brain, firsthand? Hit me up at evie@refinedhype.com with your favorite Ghostface song in the subject to be entered to win one of two pairs of tickets!
Each week we will send you a recap of our top stories, downloads, and videos.
