Kanye and Jay-Z (YeHova) are still very, very firmly on top, but there's no denying that "Watch the Throne" took a very sharp dive this week. After opening up with 430,000 first week sales this week they moved a relatively paltry 175,000 units, and it's only going to do downhill from here. See more...
The sky is blue, water is wet, Rosa Acosta is fine and YeHova (Yeezy x Hova) have the number one album in the country. It's no surprise that "Watch the Throne" did such big numbers, but the duo didn't just do well, they answered any possible criticism. Despite being online only for the first few days, "WTT" sold 430,000 copies, making it the second fastest selling album of the year. See more...
Eminem's spent so much time at number one of the past year we may as well start calling a number one album an Eminem. Like, "Will Big Sean's debut album go Eminem? We'll find out next week?" Despite the fact that it had no major hit single and was rampantly dysfunctional, his collab album with Royce da 5'9", Bad Meets Evil, debuted at the Eminem spot this week, moving 170,000 units.
Let me start off by quoting my favorite writer, me. In my review for Tech N9ne's new album, "All 6's & 7's", I wrote: "Tech is the most powerful independent artist in the country – and at a time when being signed to a major label is only a small step above sharecropping, you can make the case that he’s one of the most powerful artists period." Unfortunately I've picked a pretty shitty week to make my return as America has collectively decided it doesn't give two shits about any new rap albums. That might change in the coming weeks as Tech N9ne, Big Sean and some other big projects drop, but for now Wiz Khalifa's "Rolling Papers" is the top hip-hop album in the country. See more...
You got to love the internet, it's the most efficient distributor of completely incorrect information ever invented. Case in point, the "Wiz Khalifa only sold 6,000 copies of 'Rolling Papers' in his first week!!!" rumors that are currently exploding on the interwebs. When I first heard them I thought, there's absolutely no way that's true, and after a little research it turns out that...yeah...um...they're completely bullshit. See more...
They'll be parading in the streets of BreezyFansVille today, Chris Brown's new album "F.A.M.E." is number one! Yeah!!! Now allow me to rain, or sprinkle, on their parade. First, 27,000 copies is not exactly massive first week sales. (Five year ago that wouldn't have gotten you a top 100, my how things have changed.) See more...
So who benefited the most from this year's Grammy Awards? A little someone you may have heard of before - Dr. Dre. While the good doctor is still getting worked by the Katy Perry's of the world, I think we can already say "I Need a Doctor" is a hit. Now, about that album....
Last week I caused some citizens of RefinedHype nation to have a minor aneurysm by merely reporting the fact that Nicki Minaj's debut album "Pink Friday" has almost passed Kanye's new school classic "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" in total sales. Well, we can now officially remove the "almost". Nicki's officially more marketable than Kanye. See more...
In case you haven't noticed, no one puts out an album in January. Motherf**king no one. That means those currently with a top ten album dropped it before the holidays and has simply outlasted everyone else. And so who's got the most staying power in hip-hop? I know a lot of you probably don't want to hear this, but Nicki Minaj. See more...
Each week we will send you a recap of our top stories, downloads, and videos.
