Over the 4th of July weekend Charles Hamilton lost his mind (pun intended) and essentially cleared out his entire catalog in a manic fit of mixtape dropping. It was more than a little random when Hamilton put out his “Well This Isn’t Akward: Winner Takes All” mixtape, but then apparently feeling inspired (or methed out) he proceeded to drop another 5 mixtapes throughout the weekend.

Like most people, I’ve got a love/hate relationship with Charles Hamilton. Despite the fact that he announced he his “Binge 3” mixtape would be the last work we heard from him before the release of his official album single, he released approximately 79 new tracks before then, and now that the aforementioned single has arrived, I find my patience worn thin. Upon reading the title “Press C,” the first thing that I thought of were those four yellow buttons on the Nintendo 64 controller (which evolved into their own little analog stick in the Gamecube era). But, of course, Charles Hamilton is a Sega man; the Genesis “C” button was the one that made everyone’s favorite spiky blue guy perform his Super Sonic Spin attack. Charles Hamilton seems like one of those guys who it might be really awkward to be stuck talking to at a party. Not that I’m basing that conjecture on anything beyond the fact that he’s done and said some sorta crazy stuff, and that he has an elaborate life philosophy based on Sonic the Hedgehog games. And that most definitely doesn’t make it any less cool that he’s Chipmunk-ized The Cars’ “Just What I Needed” for the latest of several leaks leading up to the release of his next single. Apparently B.o.B. and Charles Hamilton have been BFFs ever since they met for last year’s XXL Freshman list, and that friendship has finally produced some tangible results. Today the dynamic duo released a new track “Paperboy”, apparently just for the fucks of it, and the results are dope. Produced by the men themselves, plus Woody, the track uses the classic Nintendo game of the same name (pause for nostalgia) as the basis for the beat, which Hamilton and Bobby Ray predictably kill with some predictably fresh and eclectic flows. Charles Hamilton, the rapper everyone loves to hate, is continuing his comeback tour with his new mixtape “The Binge: Vol. 3”, a project that, like nearly all his projects, contains both some of the dopest rhymes I’ve heard in a minute, and a couple tracks that make me cringe. Still, when you walk the thin line between greatness and insanity like Hamilton does, you’re bound to fall on the other side of that line on occasion (see Quentin Tarantino, Eminem, etc.). Ultimately, half of you are going to download this mixtape because your fans, and the other half will download it to pick it apart. And you know what? Anyway, having officially completed his comeback the always controversial Charles Hamilton is back on his grind and preparing the release a new mixtape, hence today’s latest offering, “Deuces”, a track that’s essentially a freestyle over “The One”. The Charles Hamilton is back “don’t call it a comeback” comeback tour continues in full swing with the release of the manic depressive “Loserville”, an oddly bouncing cut featuring some stripped down, almost video game-esque production from the man himself and a parade of low self-esteem rhymes from Hamilton. Don’t call it a comeback…actually, feel free to call it a comeback. Charles Hamilton apparently is. Earlier this summer Charles Hamilton was riding high on a wave of hype that had some (most notably Charles Hamilton himself) proclaiming him to be one of the best rappers alive, but then alleged mental health issues prompted his label to shelve him in order to avoid some sort of Britney-esque public breakdown.
