You see, Sol also means “sun”, and a parable is a story that conveys a large meaning through analogy or metaphor, so Black Sunn’s new EP “Sol Parables” is Sunn/Sol’s hip-hop allegory. Just in case you don’t have a dictionary and thesaurus handy, let me put this another way. Baltimore native and constant innovator Black Sunn has a new EP out, it’s called “Sol Parables” and it sounds dope. Oh, and it also features verses from J. Noal, B. Wisdom and 810, along with production from the awesomely named Damu the Fudgemunk, Remot and kid wonder Mydus. There. That wasn’t so complicated, was it? See more…
A few weeks ago Baltimore up-and-comer Black Sunn dropped his epically titled “God Sound” LP, a work that announced Sunn as an emcee to be reckoned with. Now, slightly more than a month after the LP’s release, we’re being treated to one of the track’s that just missed the cut, “U Feel Me”, a bouncing cut featuring a guest verse from D. Julien and a hypnotizing beat from Mydus. More importantly, Sunn proves that his delivery is on point with this one, switching it up between slowly winding bars and rapid fire lines. He’s skinny, young, doesn’t rock a chain and I don’t think I’ve heard him use the word “swagger”, but Baltimore native Black Sunn still somehow manages to make some dope hip-hop (shocking, I know). Finally, after months or building anticipation, we have his new LP “God Sound”, a work of positive musical energy that’s free of pretension but full of dope hip-hop. See more to listen and download.
Two videos hit my inbox this morning and they were they couldn’t have been more different. “Passing By” from Baltimore indie artist Black Sunn is the definition of low budget, focusing entirely on the music. On the other hand, Gucci Mane’s “Wasted” is an alcohol soaked ode to mutli-millionaires featuring more groupies than a “For the Love of Ray-J” casting call. Put them side-by-side and the two videos become a testament to the current state of the hip-hop game.
Honesty, the bulk of what I know about Baltimore comes from watching “The Wire.” But I’ve heard rumors of their unique hip-hop style for years, and while Black Sunn may not be your typical B-More rapper (he may not be your typical anything) his new Black Sunn EP certainly does the city proud. Produced entirely by Damu, The Sunn is Black has a dark, cerebral sound that could only come from one man’s mind. See more to listen and download.
