Call it that "R.E.D. Album" Syndrome. An album is pushed back again and again after every single flops. With every push back hip-hop nation becomes convinced the album's going to flop too, and said rapper slowly but surely loses relevancy. Then the album drops amidst all-time low expectations...and it actually turns out to be pretty damn good. We saw that complicated, unlikely scenario play out for Game's "R.E.D. Album" and now it looks like we're seeing the same with
Young Jeezy's "TM 103".
It's been almost four years since "The Recession", which in retrospect was vastly underrated, and in the meantime all we'd heard from Jizzle was toilet water like "Money". But then "
F.A.M.E." dropped and it was cool, then "
I Do" dropped and it was dope, then "
Talk to Me" and now "
Just Like That". That's an impressive streak of non-wackness for someone I'd pretty much written off.
"Just Like That" is what I want from a Jeezy track: a huge beat from
Drumma Boy and gravel-voiced rhymes. The man's not Nas and I don't want him to try to be. This is that ignorant, aggressive shit I'm looking for from the Snowman - all this track needs is a Juicy J verse and it'd be perfect.
Will "TM103" prove to have "R.E.D. Album" Syndrome, or will I have to trademark "TM103" Syndrome (when an album looks like it may have "R.E.D. Album" Syndrome but turns out to actually just suck)? We'll have to wait until December 20 to find out for sure.
