Female rap has been dormant for some time now, and
Nicki Minaj, who some say is the second coming of Lil' Kim, is here to change that. With sex appeal, bold style and a co-sign from the biggest crew in the game right now (
Cash Money/Young Money), she's in good position to take the throne of female rap. This week we take a look at her video from her latest single "
Massive Attack" where she flexes her muscle and commissions the best in the game Hype Williams to direct her clip.
Hype Williams, somewhat elusive hip-hop video master comes back and does a great job directing the video. While it's not his best, it is very reminiscent of Missy Elliot, and some of his more recent color heavy/fashion work. Nicki is seen being chased by a helicopter and he gets some great aerial shots of her pink Lamborghini driving through the desert.
The strange exotic dancing and costuming are also interesting and off the wall, once again very reminiscent of some of Hype's best work with Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes. Especially haunting are the two Caribbean soldiers with the whited out eyes dancing (you have to see it for yourself). While of the ideas fall flat, it's good to see Hype helm a larger budget project and take some creative risks again. It also doesn't hurt that the video features two of the biggest sex symbols in hip-hop right now (Nicki and Amber Rose).
With one of the biggest buzzes in the industry right now (Drake being the only other contender as a new artist) Nicki is probably one of the few people can can command a large enough budget to get Hype Williams and to have him direct at all.
She's probably not going to be winning any awards for empowering the feminist movement or advancing women's rights, but so what? Sit back, relax and watch the eye candy. It's Barbie Bitch!
