Video Breakdown: DJ Khaled’s “We Takin Over”  (Review & Video)

We da best! We takin’ over! And now All I do is Win. DJ Khaled is the DJ everyone loves to hate, the guy who knowingly pokes fun at himself yet manages to stay relevant in the music industry. He’s beaten out a lot his counterparts and transitioned into mainstream brand. His albums have gone platinum, and he doesn’t rap and barely produces on them. This week The Video Breakdown dissects the hit of 2007 “We Takin’ Over” featuring Akon, Rick Ross, TI, Fat Joe, Birdman, and Weezy.

Sometimes you see something so bad that it’s good. It makes you think, “Did this really turn out this bad, or is this intentionally bad and just knowingly mocking itself tongue in cheek?” DJ Khaled’s video for We Takin’ Over solidly falls into this category. As an ever so sage denizen of youtube observed: joeonyoutxbe Dude I swear every Khaled video is the same... hes runnin’ from something and everybody he runs into happens to be a rapper”. The funniest part about this comment is that it’s pretty much true. What’s funnier, seeing DJ Khaled get ambushed by a SWAT team that’s really a crew of top tier rappers or him and Fat Joe rapping on a boat while they run from the feds?

And let’s not forget the fact that he’s lip-synching while all of his artists rap or the ridiculous gestures and demeanor he carries himself with. All this aside, the song is a beast, and was pretty much the best song that year. He got the hottest verses from the hottest artists in the game and put it on one hit song. Not one or two of the hottest artists, not three, six. Count it six artists. That’s over 10 million combined records sold in one place if not much more. And each one delivers their best stuff, with Lil’ Wayne spitting the best verse of that year. Ridiculous, absurd, call it what you want, but DJ Khaled’s video for We Takin’ Over still draws you in despite its laughability, much like Khaled himself. He may not have any discernible musical talent, but he’s a hell of a self-promoter and makes you think maybe he really is smarter than he plays himself out to be. We Da Best!
