Tupac, Mike Tyson & the Death of an American Outlaw (Video & Download)

Tupac 2Pac Mike Tyson
"Hated by many, respected by all." During his heyday, when he not only beat boxers, he destroyed them, those were the words adorning a promotion poster of Mike Tyson, but they could have just as easily have applied to another self-destructively talented man at the top of his craft; Tupac Shakur. Perhaps it's not so strange then that the two men became friends, and that, in a historical coincidence, Tyson's camp were only feet away at the time of Pac's death. While the story of their friendship has been largely unknown, myself included, ESPN's dope 30 for 30 series has documented the pairing of the American outlaws in their new documentary "One Night in Vegas".

"One Night in Vegas" in its entirely is below, and as an added bonus I've included a remix of one his classic tracks that Pac did for Iron Mike, titled "Ambitionz Az a Fighta". There's no doubt that Pac looked at Mike, a black man simultaneously hated and feared by America, but whom people also couldn't look away from, and saw himself. Similarly, those who weren't around for the peak of both men's careers can't possibly understand the impact they had, just how dominant they were. Who else could drop a track like this? Who else knocked men out like this? No one.

I thought this was one of the more well produced films in the '30 For 30' series. It did a good job of showing the relationship between two men who shared uncanny similarities and not really dwelling too much on the death of Tupac Shakur (which some viewers may have expected while watching).

Nathan you made a very interesting statement saying "those who weren't around for the peak of both men's careers can't possibly understand the impact they had, just how dominant they were". I can really agree with that statement as I was 8 years old when Tupac passed and even younger during his career. Even though we can research all we want and go back to listen to music, I don't think individuals of my generation or younger can truly understand the impact of 2Pac as an artist and Tupac as a man because didn't really personally experience it.

That's why I was kind of confused when people got aggy about Drake's lyrics, "I never cried when Pac died, but I probably will when Hov does" because I think that was an honest statement for our generation and our musical influences at least in the Hip-Hop/Rap genre. In a sense he has the same impact and influence on our generation ('00s, '10s...) that Pac and Big had on the previous generation ('90s).

I watched this yesterday and was really impressed. It gave me a new respect for Mike and it almost seems he lost some of his will to win after tupac passed away. I never realized how young Tyson was when he started, and how much of a beast he really was. Also, how different everything would be if tupac was able to grow into the mature man and role model he would have been.

Had to DVR "One Night in Vegas," but please believe I'll be watching it asap. ESPN's "30 for 30," has been a revolutionary series, and if you haven't already, check out "Straight Outta L.A." Fortunately, I was old enough to remember both of them in their prime, man what a spectacle. I'll be honest I wasn't aware of their friendship. This should be a dope segment as their similarities make perfect sense.
