Throwback Thursday: Positive K’s “I Got a Man” (Video)

I was driving the other day when KDAY put on Positive K's classic "refuse to take no for an answer" jam "I Got a Man" came on the radio and, I'm not gonna front, I was able to rhyme along pretty damn well. I don't know exactly when it happened, but I somehow managed to memorize every word, and I figured most of my fellow 80s babies are in the same boat. Let's find out...

The Refined Take:

1) Ok, I'm about to blow your fucking mind. After a little research I learned that K did the female vocals as well; he just raised the pitch of the vocals in production. In retrospect it seems obvious, but for all these years I though that was female emcee with an annoying voice. I haven't been this disillusioned since I found out Santa wasn't real. I'm just in shock right now.

2) I love that there was a time when a dude could put on white sneaks, tube socks and purple shorts, look in the mirror, and think, hells yeah, I look fly. God bless the early '90s.

3) You know that's secretly my favorite part of this video? The guy in the green striped shirt you can see in the background. That dude is having the motherfu**king time of his life; just looks incredibly happy. See?

4) So all three girls happen to be at the same house party? Horrible luck for K, although it begs an obvious question: where are their men? I'm not pro handcuffing, but if my girl was going out dressed in a skin tight red satin dress you better believe I'd be there too. Maybe these men deserve to have their girls swooped up.

5) So what's Positive K up to now? I don't know, you tell me. After his 1992 album he's more or less disappeared, popping up for a minute on Nas' 2006 "Where Are They Now" '90s remix, which, aggravatingly, doesn't explain where K is now.

Man, it's like going into the Matrix. I've been living a lie all these years.

Now that is one helluva disturbing information. Totally ruined the enjoyment factor of the song for me. Thanks a lot! Nathan.

Now admit it! he raps better as a female than as a male. hahaha

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Top Hat, and yeah, his "female" flow might actually be better. Crazy pills.
