I was inspired by Burmy's article earlier today on Lil Kim to go back and listen to some vintage Biggie, and of course found myself playing Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s "Get Money" over and over again. Thinking it was a sign from the hip-hop god's, I decided I had no choice put to make the song today's "Throwback Thursday". Enjoy:
The Refined Take:
1) Between "You wanna sip Moet on my livin room floor / play Nintendo...." here and his "Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis / When I was dead broke, man I couldn't picture this" line on Juicy, I just realized that Biggie really, really liked video games, which makes sense. I can totally picture him kicking back and playing Nintendo while smoking a blunt. It's a shame he didn't live to see the era of PS3 and XBox.
2) I think we can all agree that their cameos in this video are easily the most "gangster" things Salt-N-Pepa ever did.
3) It's hard to imagine their was a time when mutli-colored sweaters were considered fly, but that was the 90s for you. On that other hand, it'd be good too see some rappers bring back those dark suits Biggie rocks here. Now that's why they called the man a player.
4) Ok, here's what I don't understand about this video. Starting at about the 1:15 mark Biggie comes home, presumably to whoop the Faith Evans stand-in that's been cheating on him and tried to get him locked up. He chases her up the stairs, she runs down a hallway and he...keeps running in the other direction. What? Either Biggie was the worst person chaser in history, or he's got some other plans. By the way, what are the odds that was actually Biggie? Something tells me the man didn't do a lot of running. I smell a double.
5) So what happened to Junior M.A.F.I.A.? Well, the group split up after Biggie's death, Lil Kim went onto large-scale solo success and everyone else - Lil' Caesar, Klepto, Bugsy, Capone, Chico, Nino Brown - were completely forgotten. Cease, MC Klepto and Larceny released an album in '07, titled "Riot Musik", under the Junior M.A.F.I.A. name, but the world predictably completely ignored it. In other words, Junior M.A.F.I.A. was Biggie, Lil Kim, and a bunch of other dudes who couldn't make it on their own.
