The way I see it, Throwback Thursday serves two primary purposes. One, to remind you of some dope tracks you haven't listened to in years (like M.O.P.'s "Ante Up" ). And two, to give you a look back at your favorite artists in their early years (like Jay-Z's "I Can't Get With That"). I'd like to believe this week's selection, Janet Jackson's classic "That's the Way Love Goes" fulfills both those roles. Damn she was beautiful back then.
1) If you had told me then that Janet would someday marry this guy, I would have said you were crazy. J.D.'s the man when it comes to prodution, but the attractiveness gap between the two is incredible. No wonder they're one of hip-hop's most unmatched couples.
2) For the record, yes, that is Jennifer Lopez, who was one of Janet's back-up dancers at the time. (She's the one with the insanely exaggerated Latina accent: "Janet, listen to us when we're talkin to you!") 17 years later J-Lo would go on to completely eat it at the American Music Awards, so, you know, she's come a long way.
3) Goddamnit Tish, just let the song play! Fucking Tish. She's such a whore. (Note: That probably makes no sense unless you just actually watched the video.)
4) I didn't really realize just how big this song was until I started doing the research. Did you know this is Janet's biggest song ever? It was number one in the country for eight straight weeks and won her a Grammy. Unfortunately, Tish interrupted her Grammy acceptance speech to exclaim, "Yo, these Grammys are slammin!" Fucking Tish.
5) So where has Janet been since "That's the Way Love Goes". Sadly, it's not good news. In no particular order, she flashed the world, dropped an album with J.D. that bombed, dropped an album w/out J.D. that bombed and is now far more famous for appearing in Tyler Perry movies than her music. Yep, that pretty much raps it up.
