Throwback Thursday: Digital Underground “The Humpty Dance” (Video)

Posted by Nathan S. on 05/20/10 | Filed under Features, Videos, Throwback Thursday

I can't remember exactly, but I'm sure there was a time when my mom walked through the living room, saw me watching Digital Underground's "Humpty Dance" video on MTV and immediately considered canceling our cable. There aren't a lot of songs that can have that kind of effect, but Shock G and Digital Underground's "Humpty Dance" is one of them. Oh, and I like my oatmeal lumpy. Just thought I'd mention that.

The Refined Take:

1) I love the fact that die hard Pac fans like to pretend like Shock G never existed. Sorry guys with Thug Life tattooed on their stomachs, but Pac got his start with Digital Underground, and that dude onstage wearing the fur coat and rubber nose was one of Pac's mentors, as well as the producer of "I Get Around", and co-producer of "2Pacalypse Now". All true facts.

2) The real joke here is that Shock G is completely in on the joke. Shock's actually a damn good emcee, and if you listen closely you'll realize that while the lyrics are all jokes, they're jokes that only a talented man could write. Call it organized chaos if you will.

3) Getting busy in a Burger King bathroom is actually one of the leading signs of sex addiction. If you ever find yourself getting down in a BK stall please, seek help.

4) I think I found my next Halloween costume! Now the only question is, where do I get a giant fur hat? And before you start feeling bad for her, my wife knew what she was getting herself into.

5) So where is Digital Underground now? That's hard to say. Digital Underground was never really a "group" in the traditional sense, more like a constantly revolving loose collection of artists. While Digital doesn't currently exist in any form, Shock G is still around and making music

My favorite (corny) old-school hip-hop track. You gotta (secretly) love the (corny) classics!

No need to be secret about it Bgirl. I'll openly admit I like this song, and that the real secret is that it's not as corny as people say. There aren't many songs that have this many memorable lines. Respect to Shock G. Even when he's acting the fool he's dope.
