Regular readers know that I've got a little thing for the late-great Aaliyah, so while I was set on giving her today's Throwback Thursday spot to belatedly celebrate her birthday, I'd already covered "Rock the Boat", "One in a Million" and "If Your Girl Only Knew". Looks like I've got no choice but to drop some "We Need a Resolution" in your laps. Complaints? I thought not.
The Refined Take:
1) For the record, "We Need a Resolution" was the lead single off her classic self-titled album, "Aaliyah", which was a moderate hit on the charts (top 20) but I remember playing on repeat in every car and house I was in that summer.
2) In retrospect it's amazing she married me considering I spent a solid six months after this came out responding to everything my girlfriend said with a "frikky frikky...baby girl" Timbaland impression. I highly recommend you give it a try today, it's a lot of fun. For you that is, not so much for the person you're saying it to.
3) The lyrics raise an important question - who the fuck would stand Aaliyah up? When a woman like that wants to go out with you, you pick her up. I've got a resolution for you Aaliyah, break up with him and get with me. Figuratively speaking of course.
4) What do you think is the iconic image of Aaliyah? For me it comes down to her with the snake in this video, and her decked out on that raft in "Rock the Boat". Any other candidates? Maybe her wedding photo with R. Kelly?
5) Aaliyah is the Bo Jackson of r&b. If a tragedy (injury for Bo, the fatal airplane crash for Aaliyah) hadn't struck we could be looking at one one of the best to ever play their position. Instead, we're left wondering what if and mourning the loss of so much promise. R.I.P. Aaliyah.
