#RefinedHate: Snoop Dogg & T-Pain’s “Boom” (Listen & Download)

Posted by Nathan S. on 03/04/11 | Filed under Downloads, Snoop Dogg, T-Pain, RefinedHate, Terribleness

As regular readers know I've been toying with this idea for a little while now, and of course we've essentially already been doing it (see here), but I decided it's time to finally make it official. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present #RefinedHate. If you can't already guess, they'll simply be columns in which I unabashedly hate on songs that deserve to be hated on. And what better way to kick things off than with Snoop Dogg's new terrible single, "Boom". O ley do it.

First, that beat makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit. I know it's trendy to flip super cheesy 80s songs into hip-hop tracks (we can thank Just Blaze for starting that one), but, as my friends in the South would say, you can't put lipstick on a pig. It was bad originally, and it's bad now. And who created this masterpiece? Could it be? Wait, that's....Scott Storch's music! My how times have changed. Scott went from Roots band member to super hot producer to bankrupt to sounding like a poor man's JR Rotem.

Second, I don't begrudge Snoop doing the crossover pop thing, I really don't. Go ahead and get next to Katy Perry Snoop, I won't blame you. With that said, can you still at least do us the favor of trying? Just a little bit? To call these Dr. Seuss rhymes would actually be an insult to Dr. Seuss. "Get ya money / whip ya hair / executive branch / blowin smoke like a playa / yeah in the club / yes it cracks." Really? Really? I'm pretty sure that doesn't even rhyme.

Here's the craziest part of all - I actually don't mind the T-Pain hook. Even if it's like being the tallest midget, he's easily the least terrible part of this. Take that hook, replace it with a better beat and a better rapper, and you might just have something worth listening to.

Allright, I've said my peace people. Now it's your turn - get to #RefinedHate-ing.

Boom shaka laka in a hook? Come on. The hook is just as bad. The only way this song could have been worse is Mike Posner had been on it.

Maybe someone can remix it into a Boom-shaka-bow-wow song.

You know what's the worst part? I can easily see people loving this. Chicks are gonna go insane for that beat. Especially the boom shaka laka. I can easily see my sheepier friends digging this.

In my opinion, if I were to finish a long hard week of filming and I just wanted to party with a few of my friends downtown I could give two hoots about the lyrical content because as long as the song is packed with energy I would just want to have fun. Songs like Boom are meant for having fun too (and to make $1.29 each on itunes), not to take the lyrics too seriously. I believe that was the point behind this song.

So have fun, put your hands in the air, whip yo hair and go laa-la-la-laaaa.

@jackcbass001 Other than the hook, I don't think there's enough energy on the beat or the verses to really get down to this.

And just to show I'm not hating on party records, you know what's a great song. Kiss Kiss, by Chris Brown and T-Pain. Seriously. Real turn off your brain and have fun music.
