It's easy to look back at the music we bumped when we were kids growing up in the '80s (at least that's when I grew up), but although the ridiculous denim jackets and epidemic of mullets may be what history remembers about the decade, it's easy to forget some f-ing dope music also got made, starting with Salt-N-Pepa's "Push It." More than just some nostalgic old-school jam, "Push It" might just be the best party anthem in hip-hop history. And no, I'm not kidding.
I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell! Seriously though, when that cowbell kicks in on the bridge, while the synth line is blasting over the bass and you can hear the crowd noise in the background...I just mean...damn. If you think I'm over exaggerating, I dare you to throw on "Push It" at a party full of 80's babies and see what happens. I dare you. Almost 20 years after it first inspired America to do that superfly air hump move, "Push It" can still hold its place next to any modern party jam.
Remember when...
The Refined Take:
1) The amount of "Salt and Peppers" you get when you Google "Push It" is hilarious/depressing.
2) I love Pepa (a.k.a. Sandra Denton) but those gold fronts on the album cover were a bad call. As was the poodle quasi-mullet hair-do. On the plus side, those gold rope chains are ill.
3) It's my goal in life to have my girl say, "Can't you hear the music pumpin hard like I wish you would." So far, no dice.
