First
new music from Lauryn Hill, and now
Public Enemy? Yeah, I guess I'm feeling a little old school today. Excuse me while I go put on a fat gold rope chain...
And I'm back. Every time I saw even a snippet of "Flava of Love" I pictured
Chuck D sitting in his house and quietly sobbing, wondering where it all went wrong. No one - I repeat, no one - kept it as real as Chuck D. Public Enemy was the epitome of hip-hop's ability to be used as a tool for political and social change, for
fighting the power if you will, and Chuck was the group's fearlessly intelligent voice. While
Flava was (obviously) always the crazy side of PE, I can't imagine Chuck was super excited about watching him willing exploit himself in front of millions of white people. That show was not exactly a good look for black folks, or humans in general.
Whatever Chuck and Flava's personal relationship, they've reunited to to put together a few new tracks for their
massive boxset, and the latest offering is "
Tell It Like It Really Is". This track may not have the same energy as that old, old school PE, but it's still damn good to hear the crew together. Someone get my copy of "Do the Right Thing". I'm going to be watching that flick on repeat all day.
(It's good to know
I'm not the only one telling the truth.)
