PSY’s “Gangham Style” Video: Secretly Dope, or Openly Terrible?Posted by Nathan S. on 08/01/12 | Filed under Humor, Videos |
I get sent a lot of videos for "Fails of the Week" consideration and there's really no doubt about 99% of them. The "Pokemon Rap" video is an atrocity, it just is. But I have no idea what to make of PSY's new "Gangham Style" video. Either this is the worst thing I've seen all week, or the best. I don't think there's really a middle ground here.
First, some quick context, or at least all the context I can figure out. If there are Korean members of RefinedHype Nation who can break this down better than me please, have at it. So....Park Jae Sang, better know as PSY, is a Korean rapper known for his sense of humor and reportedly insane live shows. Apparently Gangham is an area of Seoul known for being ridiculously wealthy, like the Beverly Hills of S. Korea, so doing it "Gangham Style" means being stupid rich (doing yoga, riding horses, etc.).
In other words, this is really a parody video, although I don't get a single one of the jokes. I imagine this is what it must feel like to be a S. Korean watching the "Shawt Bus Shawty" video. You know there's something hilarious happening, you just don't understand any of it.
All I really know is this shit is oddly hypnotizing - I've now watched it about four times in a row, and I might go back for fifths. You know what, I think I'm going with "secretly dope", although I'm also respectably drunk right now. I'll have to count on RefinedHype Nation to set me straight.
