Novel, the always inventive singer/songwriter/producer extraordinaire, is back on the scene with his new video "E.O.T.W.", a self-directed piece that also references the cult-classic flick "Donnie Darko." To put it more simply, Novel's dope, the song's dope and the video's dope. It's a virtual Mardi Gras of dopeness up in here.
The Refined Take:
1) "Donnie Darko" scared the bejeezus out of me the first time I saw it, definitely not one of those movies you should watch alone. Here, instead of a giant killer rabbit we get a little kid in a skeleton costume haunting the background of every Novel shot. It's a little creepy, but it's not nearly as scary as, you know, a giant f**king killer rabbit.
2) I'm assuming the kid in this is a young Novel? Right? Any alternate theories? Anyone?
3) It's a pretty damn enjoyable video, but I'm really digging the song. Novel's rhyme skills have been consistently improving, and the melody on this has been stuck in my head since I first heard it. Always good to hear the man back at work.
4) This video really reminded me of another video I just saw (minus the skeleton kid) but I couldn't put my finger on it. It was killing me..then boom! Esso's "Views From the Top". Definitely not the same video, but similar vibe with the L.A. rooftop shots.
5) "Cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know, how soon it will be too late." Words to live by. Make sure you do something kind for someone today. Yeah, even you "guy who thinks he's super hard." I know you got a grandma too.
