True story: at this year's A3C, I stood next to Brother Ali while he talked to Prodigy and insisted that Mobb Deep was one of the reasons he fell in love with hip-hop. That's really the whole story, P mostly just stood there and nodded, but it did give me a new appreciation for Brother Ali, and for the complexities of hip-hop.

So with that surreal moment in mind, when I first heard Ali's new cut, "Not a Day Goes By", I could actually hear Mobb Deep's influence. Not in any overt way, but in the aggressive spirit, in the way that Ali attacked the beat in the opening verse.

Or, alternately for those of you who don't give a fuck about my name-dropping stories, this new Brother Ali joint is fucking dope. Jake One once again absolutely crushes the beat, and we actually get a rare double-time flow from Ali. Don't get it twisted. The Rhymessayers emcee's got some serious soul, but he'll also snap your neck on the mic.
