I'm been impressed by what I've heard from
Nas and Damian Marley's collaborative album "Distant Relatives" so far (i.e. "As We Enter" and "Strong Will Continue") but their latest effort "
My Generation" is by far their best. Essentially a new and (arguably) improved version of God's Son's "I Can", the track also features vocals from
Joss Stone and a verse from his royal
Weezyness. In fact, there's so much going on here let's break it down one by one:
Nas: Did I already mention this is basically "I Can" part two? Nas gets on his revolutionary street intellectual tip, which is where I like him best. He might be coming with it because he needs strong album sales to pay Kelis' child support demands, but however it's happening, Nas is on his game right now.
Damian Marley: Shamefully I don't know enough about reggae to be able to truly analyze Damian's work here, other than to say that yep, he sounds pretty good, and I don't really understand what he's saying. Still, the effect is perfect.
Joss Stone: I'm officially instituting the Joss Stone All-Stars, a team comprised entirely of white English women who sing like black American women. So far she's the only member of the team, but if anyone else has examples please, send em along.
Lil Wayne: Well, we finally know that Wayne isn't exactly at his best when he's doing the social consciousness thing. Still, I have to give it to the man for trying, the result's a perfectly decent effort.
More importantly, all the players on this one work extremely well together and the result is nothing but dopeness. Respect - and go cop "Distant Relatives" when it drops May 18.
