Don't even front like the only music you ever listened to in 1998 was Mobb Deep. You couldn't be alive and living in America in '98 without hearing Monica and Brandy's "The Boy Is Mine" four hundred times a day and rightfully so - it was the single biggest collaborative R&B track of all-time. I'm talking about 13 consecutive weeks at number one, 2.5 million copies sold and a Grammy. Both singers were at the peak of their popularity at the time, and their was a real or imagined feud brewing between them, so "The Boy Is Mine" was pure marketing genius. Imagine Rihanna and Nicki Minaj doing a record fighting over Drake - that's how big tat shit was. If it dropped today the interwebs would explode.
So while the duo's new single "It Belongs to Me' is honestly more of a chance for me to remember the late '90s (pretty damn good times for Nathan S.) than a chance to express my love for "It Belongs to Me", I still can't hate on a Monica/Brandy reunion. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go watch "Armageddon".
The 2012 edition is below the original, of course.
