Between Frank Ocean, MURS new "Animal Style" video and "Same Love", the latest release from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, it's hard not to feel like the tide is truly beginning to turn against hip-hop homophobia. It's a trend that you could see in political and social terms, and you wouldn't be wrong; "Same Love" obviously has a very specific, very politically motivated idea (the legalization of same-sex marriage). But I think it's important to also see it simply as music finally beginning to acknowledge an ordinary, every day fact of life; there are gay people in the world.

So props to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for taking a stance like this, and doing it in a way that sounds pretty damn good at the same time. "Same Love" is being released in via Sub Pop Records as a limited run 7? vinyl on July 31, all proceeds will benefit marriage equality in Washington State.

On a related but completely separate note, if you're looking for examples of indie artists succeeding on a major label level, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are laying down the blueprint. While they're far from household names, they're still embarking on a world tour and I've got a feeling their debut album "The Heist" is going to surprise a lot of people with the numbers it does.
