To start off, this is not an article accusing
Lupe Fiasco of selling out, or even criticizing him for doing a record like "
Angels & Stars. (And I'm absolutely not interested in opening up the
"Lasers" debate again".) Instead, I'm far more interested in the fact that I heard Lupe on the obviously radio-aimed "Angels & Stars" and didn't blink.
It would have been insane to think this even a couple years ago, but now Lupe Fiasco is suddenly a perfectly reasonable answer whenever an artists asks "what rapper should I get for my rock/rap crossover record?" (Plus it helps that Lupe owed Eric Turner a favor for "
Break the Chain".) He may not yet be in the same lane as
Tinie Tempah, but he's got his blinker on and he's merging.
Anyway, I don't dig this, but it's not Lupe's fault. His opening verse is fine, it's Turner's melodramatic inspirational rocker guy posturing I can't stand.
