As I re-learn every time I hear The Roots, everything sounds better with live instrumentation. Everything. So it should come at no surprise that I've had this new
Laws and the
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble collaboration "
...Never" on repeat for the last hour. This is dope. Sorry, let me back up for those who aren't familiar.
Laws is the up-and-coming,
Warner Bros. signed,
J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League affiliated Florida emcee who's been putting in work on his "
4:57 PM" and "
5:01 (Overtime)" mixtape, and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, in case you couldn't tell by the name, is a 9-piece, Chicago-based group that started doing street music but have been knocking out collabs with the likes of
Mos Def, Erykah Badu, etc. Throw in some vocals from
Dave Young and you've got one hell of a record - although RefinedHype regulars
know to laugh at Laws' "I'm about to start my own shit and Damon Dash y'all" line.
This one's currently unattached to a larger project, but be sure to keep an eye out for Laws' upcoming Paul McCartney tribute mixtape (seriously), coming soon-ish.
