Lady Gaga Drops Atrocious “Telephone” Video - What the F**k Was Beyonce Thinking?

I know I'm going to get "Why are you posting this? Lady Gaga isn't hip-hop!" emails after this, so allow me to provide a quick defense of this posting. First, Gaga's new "Telephone" video is the most atrociously insane video put out by a major artist in...well...ever, and it prominently features Beyonce (a.k.a. Mrs. Sean Carter). It's over nine minutes, and once you see it there's no going back, so proceed with caution.
The Refined Take:
1) We'll get into details later, but here's what really confused the hell out of me on this one: really Beyonce? Really? Lady Gaga's entire career is built around being as controversial and insane as possible, and by that measure this video is a smash, but Beyonce's spent her entire career avoiding controversy. And now she's in a car with Lady Gaga making lesbian overtones and trying to kill Tyrese? I have a hard time believing her camp gave this a green light.
2) As the homey @reelrootsryan pointed out on Twitter, this is like a bad John Waters movie, although Waters' flicks were deliberately so bad that they're good, while this is just bad. Next time around I hope she does get Waters on board to direct.
3) If there was a way I could block out the sight of Lady Gaga's blurred vagina from my mind forever, I'd do it. Is that doctor from "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" available? Hey they invented that mind eraser from "Men in Black" yet? Or I could always just drink heavily.
4) Sadly this is the best acting I've seen from Tyrese since he screamed "That's my son!!!" for seven straight minutes in "Baby Boy". And no, that wasn't a compliment.
5) You know what? Let's not make a sandwich. How about that? I guess in the end I have to give it up to Gaga. There will come a point at which she's pushed the limits so far she'll become ironically boring (see Marilyn Manson), but she's not at that point yet. Hell, she got me to write this. Though, in the end, I still have one burning question: really Beyonce? Really?

Personally, I liked the video. But you do make a really good point when you say "she's pushed the limits so far she'll become ironically boring." How can she possibly make a video crazier than this? |

@Danielle - It's something that happens to every boundary pushing artist. Sooner or later even prison rape music videos stop being shocking. Even Madonna eventually had to tone it down. @TheBaytoLA Great point, the product placement in this is sick, though all of Gaga's videos do that. She's an "avant garde" artist who doesn't mind being sponsored by Coke. |
