Kanye West Releases Barely Watchable “All of the Lights” Video

Posted by Nathan S. on 02/21/11 | Filed under Top Stories, Videos, Kanye West, Video Breakdown

Kanye's "Runaway" short movie definitley had it's down moments, but the unofficial video for the hyper posse cut "All of the Lights" wasn't one of them. So when Yeezy released the official version my expectations were high - and then those expectations were immediately shattered. This is so barely watchable I had to give it a Video Breakdown.

1) What makes this video so frustrating is how dope the opening is with the girl walking through the snow. It's beautiful, and I've never seen anything like it. In all honesty I was one minute in thinking "goddamn, Kanye's done it again. This video's going to be a classic." And then I had my retinas seared off in a blitzkreig of flashing lights. Good times.

2) On the surface all those different lights aren't a bad idea, but talk about going overboard. By "barely watchable" I literally mean I was barely able to watch it without going into an epileptic seizure. Then again, I guess I shouldn't be surprised Hype Williams went ridiculously overboard. At least he Kanye's not driving a speedboat under a helicopter.

3) Is there are particular reason Rihanna's dressed like that chick from "The Fifth Element"? It's like she has a stipulation in her contract that she must be dressed as slutty as possible at all times.

4) You know what's complicated? Getting all those guests into a video. Solution? Forget it - we'll just briefly acknowledge they exists in text. Wait, what's that? Kid Cudi will show up to anything Kanye tells him to? In that case we'll throw him in too.

5) As much as his previous videos (like "Runaway", "Monster" and "Power") tried a little too hard, at least I found myself wanting to watch them a few times. This? This is a mess. It's going to take me the rest of the day of the just to work off the temporary blindness. If there was a way to travel back to a time before I watched this, I'd use it.

I like this. I like that it at least sticks to the subject of the song. I've seen way too many videos where someone is just standing next to a hot chick for 3 minutes. That plus more hot Rihanna makes it a good one for me.

She says it in the song Nathan "I want you to see everything." I for one am not mad at her for keeping her word. lol

Maybe it's because I've read 3 bad reviews that lowered my expectation before seeing this video, but I really liked it. It connected some of the lyrics that seemed random. Rihanna was just Rihanna; the sex tape will leak soon.

It was perfect for the title of the song. ALL OF THE LIGHTS. He incorporated ALL the motherf*ckin lights he could figure out how to. That's Kanye's over-the-top personality.

And finally, thank God Fergie was cut. Her verse marked the worst point on any of Kanye's 5 albums. I was so pissed that it came on one of his best showcases of production.

I found myself wanting to like it for the reasons XuUP17 mentioned, but in the end that was just terrible...

As for Rihanna i think she is a call girl disguised as a music artist, and i mean that quite literally

I believe Hype was beginning to make the video very Kanye-esque then the 'Snap Yo Fingas' by Lil Jon video popped in his head and decided to give people a seizure instead.

Hype is great at picking out good shots, and this video seems like a mix of a couple different ideas tossed into a single video. I mean, Kanye on the cop car and the entire beginning was dope.

That's not to say I don't see the connection between the footage (except Rihanna and Kid CuDi who were just thrown into wherever they could fit), but yeah.

All in all it's not as amazing as it could've been, but it was solid.

"ALL OF THE LIGHTS. He incorporated ALL the motherf*ckin lights he could figure out how to. That's Kanye's over-the-top personality."

Pretty much, lol.

Also, the Power video was just flat out dope man.

For me, and for the record I wasn't on E when I watched this, it was so overly literal for Kanye. Yeezy always pushes boundaries, but here the concept seems so obvious - "the song's called All of the Lights, how about we flash a lot of lights?"

That's really no different than a rapper putting a bunch of women on hot cars for his track "Women & Hot Cars".

I think we all know he's got much, much better in him.
