After
The Roots essentially added
John Legend to the crew as their vocalist, recruiting him for
two songs off their latest album "How I Got Over" and doing the collabo track "
Our Generation", the legendary Roots crew and Legend decided to make it official and put together an entire album together titled "Wake Up". Today we get the first taste of what that album will sound like with the soulful new joint "Wake Up Everybody", which, as if The Roots and Legend weren't enough musical firepower, also brings on the
new face of Rocawear Melanie Fiona and
Common.
True to the album's mission, "Wake Up Everybody" is intended to inspire and uplift, and unless you heart had been completely hardened, succeeds admirably. My only (small) complaint is that second verse, where Legend and Fiona spend a few bars urging doctors to make old people healthy. I mean, I'm not pro old people being sick, but I'm pretty sure doctors are already doing what they can. It's not like there's a cure for old age.
And thus concludes another chapter of "Nathan S. takes lyrics too literally." Seriously though, this one's a must listen.
