Between his his strangely overshadowed verse on "
Monster" and the "
Power (Remix)" we've been hearing a lot of new
Jay-Z recently, or in the case of the new mixtape joint "
Most Kings", new old Jay-Z.
Done in partnership with
Chris Martin - the Coldplay frontman Jay would also team up with for "
Beach Chair", prompting Kanye to throw a "I thought of working with Coldplay first" tantrum - "Most Kings" was originally recorded during the "Kingdom Come" sessions, but never found a beat and instead spent the last few years floating around before most recently landing on DJ Green Lantern's
"Invasion Radio 2K10" mixtape. I'll let Lantern explain further:
“This is my version working with the acapella…I’ve had this since 2006 and it was supposed to be on the "Presidential Invasion" mixtape – that never came out. Then Hov rapped these lyrics over his HP commercial drums, and the acapella went to a few different producers in search of a beat for it. I heard a Timbaland version and I think Just Blaze and a few others had it too. But by the time they made "Beach Chair", I think Jay was over trying to find a beat for "Most Kingz". Then he went to Flex show and the rest is history…”
Whatever the back story, it's a shame this never got the production it deserved. I feel like Jay killed this.
