Weekend Edition: The best of the past week on RefinedHype, running from Saturday to Monday morning.
I honestly don't think there's any question that
J. Cole's one of the more talented your artists working - and at his best (aka "Lost Ones") he's in a league of his own. But it's been hard to figure out what his plan, or more accurately, Roc Nation's plan for Young Simba is.
Cole had some serious momentum behind him after the successful
release of "Cole World", momentum that it appears like team Cole is squandering. It's now been four months without so much as a new video or freestyle from the man, a lifetime in today's breakneck-speed game.
I'm not saying he needs to be dropping daily freestyles over industry beats, but this new "
I got 2 million followers!" cut "
Grew Up Fast"? Goddamn, this shit is just straight dope. The man's rhymes are continuing to improve, especially when he's just relaxed and having fun: I think he's officially the first rapper to go on record promising to teach Diggy Simmons how to get in on lesbian orgies.
Just imagine if he dropped something like this every two weeks, or every month. Cole's name would be in the mouth of every true hip-hop lover in the world on the daily. He'd be an unstoppable force. But hey, what do I know. I'm just some interwebs rap blogger, and Roc Nation can do no wrong. I'll just stop worrying about it and start bumping "Grew Up Fast".
On a closing note, a lot of misinformation out there. Cole didn't produce this,
Canei Finch did. And the sample is from David Ruffin's "
Double Cross" - Ruffin, best known as the lead singer of The Temptations, is also the dude in the artwork.
