A Love Letter to “Inception” (Movie Review)

In an industry where filmmaking has become more of a mathematical formula than an art form, "Inception" dares to be different.

In an industry where most directors choose to spoon-feed audiences, "Inception" dares us to think.

In an industry where the vast majority of films suck, "Inception" reigns supreme.

For today’s feature, I have decided to ditch the standard rhetoric of my past reviews and substitute it with something new. In other words, don’t call this a review – call this a celebration of creativity.

Last month, I praised "Toy Story 3" as being the best movie of the year. This weekend, I changed my mind; for this, there are a few people I would like to thank.

Christopher Nolan: You, sir, are a god. "Inception" may not top "Memento" or even "The Dark Knight", but the sheer consistency of your work is incredible. There aren’t many directors out there who could take a $160 million dollar budget and still make an original film, but you most certainly did. Take notes Michael Bay; this is how it’s done.

Leonardo DiCaprio: When will you win your Oscar? Three nominations without a single win? WTF, man? I have little doubt that your performance in Inception will be overlooked by the time award season comes along but, in the eyes of this critic, you certainly deserve the recognition. Academy, if you’re reading this, (which you’re not) just hand this man a lifetime achievement award already.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page: I decided to group you together because, until now, I doubted you; for that, I apologize.

Marion Cotillard: Why has no American director cast this woman in a leading role? As the first and only winner of an Academy Award for a performance consisting only of the French language, Marion should be at the top of every director’s “must-cast” list. Her on-screen presence is incredible. If there is any performance worth taking note of in "Inception", Mrs. Cotillard has it. This woman oozes with talent.

Cillian Murphy and Michael Caine: Do I really have to say anything? Just don’t quit acting.

Hans Zimmer: I sense another Oscar nomination.

I know this wasn’t exactly your standard movie review, but I assure you, the less you know about "Inception", the better. All I can say for now is that the acting is top-notch, the cinematography is some of the best that I have ever encountered, and the scripting is about as intelligent as a science-fiction film can be. Just go see the movie. You won’t regret it.

I didn't think so. Although, I do know a few people who do. "Inception" would tie with or maybe succeed "The Dark Knight" as my second favorite Nolan film.

who did*

Also, I may be a bit bias because "Memento" is in my Top 10 and I'm not a huge fan of change. lol.

Both movies are incredible.

Christopher Nolan is that dude! Pure awesomeness. Return to one of the more audacious narrative experiments since his own "Memento", this movie is every bit as intelligent as it is gripping. Can get a bit exhausting as it demands your constant attention, but the outcome is nerve-wrecking till the very last frame.

@TheBayToLA - They aren't really the same type of movie, but yeah, I wouldn't put "Inception" over "Memento". Memento is just too amazing to top in it's mindfcuk narration. However, as already mentioned by @Mr Phantastic, the opinions may vary.

Of all the Nolan movies, my top three are:

1. The Dark Knight
2. Memento
3. Inception

While I haven't seen Inception yet, Memento screwed up my head for at least a few days after I saw it, and I thought Dark Night deserved the best movie Oscar. I can only hope this is even in the same ballpark as those two.

Dope dope dope movie. From the acting to the script, the action, and visual effects, even the fight scenes were revolutionary.

@Nathan S. - Combine that screwed head and Dark Knight's visuals.
