In the Aftermath of Chris Brown, How Will Rihanna’s Music Sound?

Rihanna, Chris Brown

She’s a one-woman wrecking crew. No matter what magazines or blogs you read, her name is somewhere among the words. Whether mentioned for her innate, overconfident fashion sense or who she’s running the town with, Rihanna is everywhere! She may or may not be aware of it, but she is one of the driving forces behind young women wanting to push the envelope from everything to how they dress to how they carry themselves. I personally adore her; however, there was a time when I was worried about the moves she made.

I won’t dare sit here and rehash what happened between her and her former beau Chris Brown. Nor will I judge, because I don’t know what it’s like to very publicly break away from an abusive relationship. What I will discuss is how, quite possibly, that night will affect the type of music she will be putting out. For example, Rihanna fervently sings the hook on Run This Town alongside two heavyweight music contenders Jay-Z and Kanye West. And she holds her own if I do say so myself; but there’s a deeper message other than locking down a whole city. Rihanna is saying she is always strapped with her voice and her team, so you better lay low because she will fight her way to the top. In laymen’s terms- she ain’t never scared. Take a gander at the lyrics; she is welcoming the challenge and calling on folks to speak up. That right there is an indication of what we should expect from Rih Rih: combative, exposed, and sincere music.

It would be a shame for her to go through all that she’s experienced (at a young age) and completely omit the simple million dollar question “How are you?” On record, there hasn’t been a retort or even an index finger wave directed at Chris. She’s at a crossroads where she can choose to hone in on the adage “time heals all wounds” and saturate our ‘Top 25 Most Played’ ipod lists with lively, up-tempo pop jams; or she can muster up everything that she’s been sitting on for the past few months and splatter her thoughts and feelings into music we can relate to. I’m hoping she chooses what’s behind door number two. Most of us at one point or another has loved someone unforgivably, lost the person, maybe got them back, only to stick to the script and write them out of our lives. Fortunately for her, she has the ability to utilize her art and pick the brains of lyrical craftsmen Ne-Yo and Justin Timberlake, who sources say are assisting her on her new album. Isn’t that what real art is about? Taking your life and splattering it against a canvas like a paint job for the world to see. We’ll watch on eagerly to see what kind of portrait comes from Rihanna – whether bright vivid shades of happiness or dark and grey colors of gloom, we’re sure this pop diva will bring it. Stay tuned.

Run This Town was actually Rihanna's song to begin with... and then Jay heard its hit power and yanked it away. Thats what you get to do when you are Hov.

Great article.

From a male point of view, I'm a little disappointed that Chris Brown hasn't openly done more to support domestic violence prevention (and disapointed at how quickly people rushed to defend him). I'm not saying that Brown's career should be over, but there are a few things that are absolutely wrong, and beating a woman is one of them, even if you're a handsome pop star.

Never going to happen. They want to move on from this saga and (try) to forget that it even happened. The responsible thing is usually never the most marketable thing...
